Climate investigation

  • Problem:

Some NASA campaigns collect high-resolution data to solve various scientific problems, such as climate change and its consequences. We must choose one of the five campaigns shared on the site and create an app with this data to educate the public about climate change on earth.

  • Objective:

Our goal is to develop an app that helps us educate people about how our actions affect the global climate and encourage them to lessen these harmful customs to terrestrial life.

What inspired us to choose this challenge?

  • We chose this challenge because this is a major global problem that puts the future of human life at risk, and is present in our daily lives. On Marajó Island, for example, the sudden change in salinity between fresh and salt water caused by the melting of glaciers caused the death of tons of fish that did not adapt to the new environment.
  • From this, we realize the importance of making people aware of the seriousness of the consequences of global warming.

How does climate change occur?

  • Global climate change occurs mainly due to high rates of deforestation, fires and pollution. From these actions, consequences arise such as the worsening of the greenhouse effect, which generates global warming, thus altering sea water levels and altering the level of rainfall around the world.

From paper to application

  • Solution:

Our solution was to develop an application with weekly questions and challenges to educate and encourage the public to avoid certain actions that are harmful to the environment.

  • Idea:

The app can be installed on android via an APK link or QR Code. It’s free for all audiences, and literate children. The player will receive weekly challenges based on actions that aim to reduce the effects of global warming. If by the end of the week the person manages to complete the challenge, they will move on to another challenge.

NASA campaigns

  • FIREX-AQ: Fire is an important natural event, but it causes costly risks to human health. In recent decades, these risks have increased due to bushfires and forest fires. This campaign was created to investigate how these fires harm air quality.
  • NAAMES: Studies how the life cycles of plankton interact with the Earth's atmosphere. From this campaign, we understand how pollution affects plankton and its consequences for the Earth's atmosphere.
  • We will use this and other NASA campaign data at the end of the weekly challenges, with a summary of these studies.

Our hackathon journey

  • We chose to participate in this hackathon because we wanted to better develop our skills and expand our knowledge about digital challenges and outer space.
  • To develop the app we used “App Inventor”, and for the designs we used “Canva” and a storyboard process to develop the system.
  • In some other hackathon, we can create an app about one of the most pressing issues in society right now, like whether we can move to Mars.
