What is National Board Certification?

    • A network of accomplished teachers who are taking leadership roles and affecting policy
    • A way to develop, recognize, and retain accomplished teaching
    • Rigorous, high standards, created by teachers, scored by teachers

NBCT Eligibility

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Three years of teaching or counseling
  • Valid state or school counseling license

NBCT Eligibility

  • Candidates must have successfully completed three years of teaching at one or more early childhood, elementary, middle, or secondary schools to achieve Board certification.
    • Applicants for ECYA/School Counseling must have successfully completed three years serving as a school counselor.

This policy change will go into effect on September 19, 2022.

More than a decade of research from across the country confirms:

  • Students taught by Board-certified teachers learn more than students taught by other teachers.
    • Estimates of the increase in learning are on the order of an additional one to two months of instruction.
    • The positive impact of having a Board-certified teacher (NBCT) is even greater for minority and low-income students.
  • This improvement in student outcomes is mirrored by NBCTs achieving stronger results on leading measures of teacher effectiveness, including robust classroom observations and value-added scores.

Research & Impact

  • Teachers who attempt or become NBCTs produce more positive outcomes in student test scores than teachers who do not. (Hattie)
  • A recent study shows that for every $1 invested in national board certified teachers, there is a $31 return on investment.
  • American Institute of Research found that students of new teachers who are mentored by NBCTs show a remarkable 6.5 months of additional learning compared with students of new teachers not mentored by NBCTs
  • NBCTs have been found to be 4 times more likely to remain in the classroom than the state average.  
    • Given the growing teacher shortage it makes sense for communities to invest in strategies proven to retain the best educators.

 Two New Studies Add to the Evidence Base on Board-Certified Teachers’ Impact on Student Achievement

  • “Board certification appears to be among the teacher credentials most consistently associated with student learning gains,” say researchers Goldhaber and Cowan. Goldhaber is director of the Center for Education Data & Research (CEDR), director of the National Center for Analysis of Longitudinal Data in Education Research (CALDER) and a vice president at American Institutes for Research (AIR).
  • Goldhaber and Cowan also found that teachers who achieve Board certification on their first attempt produce more than a month of additional learning gains compared to those teachers who pursue but never achieve Board certification. In addition, they found that the score a teacher receives on the assessment—in addition to whether or not a teacher achieves certification—is predictive of gains in student achievement.
  • In 2012, a pair of analyses published by Harvard University’s Strategic Data Project found that the students of Board-certified teachers in the Los Angeles Unified School District and in Gwinnett County, Georgia, outperformed their peers by approximately two months in math and one month in English Language Arts, based on gains in student test scores.

Additional $5K Stipends!

(In addition to the supplement provided by subsection (1) of this section, teachers and other certificated instructional staff shall be eligible for an additional supplement of $5,000 if in an instructional assignment in challenging, high poverty schools, subject to the following conditions and limitations:

  • (a) Teacher holds a valid NBPTS certificate in Literacy, English as a New Language, Math, Science, Career and Technical Education, or Special Education (New!); and
  • (b) School has been on the "Failing School" list 3 of the last 5 years; and/or
  • (c) School has a graduation rate more than 10% less than the state average for 2 of the 3 most recently posted years; and/or
  • (d) School has a free and reduced federal lunch student percentage of 75% or greater or provides meals to all students through the Community Eligibility Provision.
