Overview

  • FOLIO, an open source project
  • It aims to reimagine library software through a unique collaboration of libraries, developers and vendors.
  • It moves beyond the traditional library management system to a new paradigm
  • The apps (Modules) are built on an open platform, providing libraries more choice and delivering new services to users.
  • The FOLIO platform includes core functionality found in current library management systems and is extensible, allowing libraries to meet ever changing needs.

What is FOLIO

  • FOLIO is an open source library service platform
  • This is the only completely new system developed in the last 10 years
  • FOLIO specifications are developed by a global community of academic librarians and completely integrates physical and electronic workflows
  • FOLIO is "Open source as a service“ and it supported by EBSCO
  • The FOLIO community is organized under the open library foundation (Openlibraryfoundation.org)

  • The Users app allows you to manage user information for patrons and library staff
  • There is no separate directory or app for library staff users.
  • The difference between a library staff user and a patron is that the library staff user record has FOLIO permissions assigned to it.

  • The Organizations app allows you to manage information about organizations associated with your library.
  • The organizations app including the contact information, websites, interfaces and account.
  • The organizations you create are shared with the acquisitions and electronic resources management areas of FOLIO in the following apps: Orders, Invoices, Receiving, Agreements, Licenses, and eUsage.

Inventory

  • The Inventory app allows you to manage your collections 
  • Inventory stores bibliographic, holdings, and item data in the form of Instance, Holdings, and Item records
  • From inventory FOLIO allows to create new record
  • Using z39.50 we can download new MARC records
  • The unavailable MARC records can be explored in Share.vde

Share.vde

  • Share-VDE is a library-driven initiative which brings together the bibliographic catalogues and authority files 

  • The collaborative endeavor, based on the requirements and perceptions of libraries

  • It is promoted by Casalini Libri, international bibliographic agency.

  • Can download MARC bibliographic file

  • The readily available catalogue can import to any integrated library management software

eHoldings

  • This module allows you to manage your library’s e-resources
  • You can link your e-resources to agreements created in the Agreements app to create a relationship between the two.
  • eHoldings: Can create and delete custom packages and titles.
  • eHoldings: Can edit providers, packages, titles detail records.
  • eHoldings: Can select/unselect packages and titles to/from your holdings.
