STATE: Soon you will embark on the path to creating a film over the course of a few weeks. you will become documentarians – people who create documentaries. So, what is a documentary? A documentary is a non-fiction film or video that documents reality for the purposes of instruction, education, or maintaining a historical record, often with a focus on real people, events, and issues. You will learn and create your own short documentary on the topics that matter to you and your production team. Over 3 sessions, you will learn critical components of filmmaking that support what Harvard Professor John Kotter says is the “See, Feel, Change” approach – this approach fuels action by sparking emotion through the power of film.

STATE: Before we can begin the lessons, we need to form production teams, assign roles within those teams, and talk about the storage of documents that teams will complete as you move through the lessons.

TASKS TO COMPLETE WITH STUDENTS PRIOR TO LESSON ONE:

STORAGE OF STUDENT DOCUMENTS - You have options! You can print all copies of student protocols (2 of each per team is a good rule of thumb) and use Production Folders for teams to store their hard copy documents in the classroom or give students access to the documents through Google Classroom or other system you use. Please choose a system and go over this information with students.

Google Classroom instructions:

Save each document to your Google Drive.
Create a copy for each student when attaching from your Google Drive.
Click Drive
Select the item and click Add.
To delete an attachment, next to it, click Remove
To decide how students interact with an attachment, next to the attachment, click the Down arrow and choose an option: �Students can view file—All students can read the file, but not edit it. �Students can edit file—All students share the same file and can make changes to it. * Note: The Writer Role is the designated person to complete the forms for the group. Please share this info!�Make a copy for each student—Students get their own copy of the file with their name added to the document title. For Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides files, both you and the student can edit the document. When students turn in the assignment, they can’t edit the document until you return it to them.

Note: If you see a message that you don’t have permission to attach a file, click Copy. Classroom makes a copy to attach to the assignment and saves it to the class Drive folder.

PRODUCTION TEAMS - Using whatever protocol deemed best for your students, form production teams; if time permits allow student groups to brainstorm a name for their team or assign a Team #. Students will stay in their production teams throughout the lessons and when they are working on their projects. A good rule of thumb on group size: 4-5 students is recommended per team as they are based on roles assigned. However, this depends on your overall class size, the student dynamics, and the number of student videos desired as an outcome. The number of film kits or filming devices you have available also impacts the number of teams needed. TYPICALLY FOR THIS VERY ACCELERATED COURSE, THE CLASS WILL HAVE ONE VIDEO AS A FINAL CAPSTONE PRODUCT AND 2+ TEAM MEMBERS ARE ASSIGNED TO A ROLE.

TEAM ROLES - Assign team roles within each group or allow students to self select within their teams. Add any additional roles that have value for this project. BASIC ROLES INCLUDE:

Director – Ensures tasks are completed each day of the project; responsible for the repository for all footage (on their Chromebook, other device or location) – Recommended only 1 director per team
Writer – Serves as the recorder of information on the documents assigned, recording the information discussed within the team. The writer is the keeper of all documents that are assigned so this role should be assigned thoughtfully. More than 1 person can be assigned to help with the writing if needed.
Sound Tech – Ensures sound quality of the filming as it takes place. Listens to interviews post-filming for sound quality. Selects initial music and finalizes with input from the team – More than 1 person can be assigned to this role, depending on number of members on the team
Videographer - operating camera – ideally this person will be one person, but different team members can take turns if needed

**At the end of the filming, all members move into a specific editing role as well. See Lesson 3 for more information on editing roles.
