Causes: First Continental Congress

In 1774, 56 delegates met at Independence Hall in Philadelphia in what became known as the First Continental Congress. The delegation was formed in response to the British imposing the Intolerable Acts following the Boston Tea Party.

  • The Intolerable Acts, in addition to closing Boston Harbor, placed the city of Boston under martial law.
  • Delegates agreed that King George and the British parliament must be made to understand the grievances of the colonies.
  • The delegates also agreed to meet again in one-year if the Intolerable Acts were not repealed.
