CONTEXT

Paul & His Son in the Faith

  • Paul writes this to Timothy, his true son in the faith (1 Timothy 1:2). Paul met Timothy in Lystra (Acts 16:1-4).
  • This verse comes from the second of two pastoral letters Paul wrote to Timothy — alongside Titus, among the last letters written through Paul's hand.

9 of 37

CONTEXT

Written From a Roman Prison Cell

  • 2 Timothy is traditionally dated to Paul's final imprisonment in Rome, in the mid-60s AD, shortly before his execution under Nero.
  • In 1 Timothy, Paul instructs Timothy on how to lead, organize, and protect the church in Ephesus against false teaching.
  • In 2 Timothy, Paul's aim is to exhort Timothy to embody his calling, stay faithful to the gospel, and endure suffering for Christ.

10 of 37

CONTEXT

The Prelude to Verse 7

  • Before verse 7: Paul affirms that Timothy remains in his prayers (v.3), that he longs to see him again (v.4), and he recalls that his faith is a heritage from his mother and grandmother (v.5).
  • In verse 6, Paul urges Timothy to “fan into flame” the gift of God given to him through the laying on of hands (cf. 1Timothy 4:14) — from the Greek, anazōpyreō, “to stir up or kindle afresh.”
  • The gift to lead, teach, and represent Christ wasn't of human origin — it was divinely imparted for a purpose greater than himself.

Part A

God Did Not Give Us a Spirit of Fear

Deilia (Gk) — “cowardice, timidity, a fear caused by a lack of moral strength”

12 of 37

WHAT WAS TIMOTHY'S TIMIDITY?

Three Things Stand Out

  • The Weight of Leadership — overwhelmed by his responsibilities; some older church members didn't respect him (1 Tim 1:3; 4:12).
  • The Fear of Persecution — Paul wrote from a prison cell facing execution and didn't want the fear of suffering or death to silence Timothy's preaching (2 Tim 1:8; 2:3).
  • The Need for Courageous Faith Amid Ongoing Adversity — Paul urges Timothy not to compromise his faith or shy away from his duty (2 Tim 1:13-14; 4:1-2, 5).

NAMING THE ENEMY

Timidity Is Not a Fruit of the Spirit

  • Timidity comes from intimidation, and intimidation comes both from within and from outside us.
  • The enemy wants to rob you of the internal peace Christ gives, while stirring up outward chaos to heighten your fear.
  • Timidity makes us shy away from our faith. It makes us question our faith. It makes us live beneath God's calling on our lives.

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don't be troubled or afraid.”

EPHESIANS 1:13-14

“And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago. The Spirit is God's guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him.”

POWER

The Holy Spirit —the supernatural power that lives within us

1 THESSALONIANS 1:5-6

“For when we brought you the Good News, it was not only with words but also with power, for the Holy Spirit gave you full assurance that what we said was true. And you know of our concern for you from the way we lived when we were with you. So you received the message with joy from the Holy Spirit in spite of the severe suffering it brought you. In this way, you imitated both us and the Lord.”

A Mind Renewed

  • God's people combat timidity and fear through the transformation and renewal of our minds.

“In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God's promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Perpetua & Polycarp

  • In Water from a Deep Well: Christian Spirituality from Early Martyrs to Modern Missionaries, Gerald L. Sittser tells the stories of two early believers whose faith was tested to the point of death.
  • Polycarp, a second-century bishop, and Perpetua, a third-century follower of Christ.

Neither was fearless because they were naturally strong. Their courage came from a greater conviction:

Jesus is Lord, and He is worthy of our complete allegiance.

The question isn’t: “Will I ever be afraid?”

The question is: “When I feel timid, will I still obey Jesus?”

35 of 37

Fear and Timidity Says vs. Christ Says

Fear says, Protect yourself.

Power says, God will give me strength to obey.

Fear says, What will people think?

Love says, How can I honor Christ and love others faithfully?

Fear says, React, panic, compromise.

A sound mind says, Remember what is true. Think biblically. Remain steady.

APPLICATION

Reflect & Apply

  • Reflect: What timidity or fear is holding you back, and why?
  • Apply:
    • Rely on the power of the Holy Spirit within you to remain resilient, consistent, and unshaken.
    • Be assured of God's love and the love of this community of Christ.
    • Invest in God's Word until you grow in self-control and sound judgment and are anchored in a sound mind.

2

Of power, love, and a sound mind, which one do you most need to lean on this week, and what's one practical step you can take to do that?
