The differences between discrimination, stereotypes and bias

  • In this chapter, we will focus on the things people does to others who are different to them. We will also look at how people are affected by it.
  • For now, we are looking at three ways people would treat others differently. They are:
  • Stereotype – this is when a person or a group of people has made up their minds and now has fixed negative ideas and thoughts about people who are different.
  • Discrimination – this happens when someone or a group of people judge or treat others differently/negatively because of things such as religion, race, skin colour, wealth, gender and so on.
  • Bias – this is when someone or a group of people carries a story over in a negative or wrong way because that person or group of people has issues with someone that the story is about.

Here you will see how everyone in the class is the same, but one boy is different. He looks different, has different beliefs and English is not his first language, so he will not get a cookie.

Stereotypes

We have stereotypes when we create thoughts, ideas or beliefs about other people or things, before we even speak to them or learn about it. Sometimes we force those people to follow our thoughts, ideas or beliefs.
