Kintsugi Unit Plan Overview

  • Students will be learning the Japanese philosophy of Wabi Sabi and the Japanese tradition of Kintsugi by fusing broken ceramic pieces together and ornamenting the cracks. Alternatively, students can make a mosaic. This lesson is to help students recognize adversity they have experienced (or will experience) and find their sense of pride. As a secondary option, students may choose to work in a two-dimensional manner and create a mosaic that will also be made with ornamental fusing. Through the art of kintsugi, mosaics and personal body molding, students can realize the various bits and pieces of life experiences that shape them are  beautiful, powerful, and worthy of love and pride for the simple fact that each experience makes you who you are.
