COVID has trapped us in our homes or at the hospital, with very limited places to go. It's been helpful to feel like we still have an escape from our busy lives.

My participation in orchestra has brought joy, laughter, and balance to my life through several challenging periods. It is a skill I will always treasure.

Sometimes it's the little things, the little treat yo self moments, that get me through and lift my mood.

My Reef Tank- I prevent burnout by participating in something outside the field in which I work. Maintaining my reef tank gives me a separate lane to use the creative aspects of my mind, while still using science. It is a long term hobby that gives me great joy, stress relief, and satisfaction when it thrives. This picture is fairly recent, as my tank is rebounding after significant loss due to being away from it for so long due to COVID.

Every sunset brings a promise of a new dawn. Watching sunsets to prevent burnout. I took this picture when I visited Sleeping Bear dunes after my ICU rotation. It was a very therapeutic and calming trip.

I try to remember my priorities. I try to find a way to enjoy and relax in the necessities we cannot do away with (breathing, eating, hygiene). In the image, the food and candle are in front of those work life items to signify that the necessities are more important.

Happy place. My Post-work routing includes showering, changing into lounge clothes, lighting my Lavender/chamomile candle, and letting my television play while I scroll through Instagram…Tough days are generally better when I remind myself that I can always return to this happy place, oftentimes preventing, at least, emotional burnout…

Located on the campus of Michigan State University, The Spartan stands tall and proud. He stands there with confidence, understanding his roles and responsibilities, knowing that his fellow Spartans will always be behind him. To remain in peak condition for battle , one can assume that he takes time for himself to train, eat, and rest easier knowing that he’ll have help in battle if he needs it.

Taking breaks to self-reflect and reconnect with myself. Escaping the burden of emails, texts, and daily "to-dos", no matter how temporary. This photo was taken while I was on a trip to pictured rocks in September where I got to escape by myself for a few days.

This photo represents the color and vibrancy associated with maintaining your passion and love of your life and your job. It is colorful and balanced, with everything in it’s rightful place. There is an organization to it, but also is beautiful and full of color and life.

Preventing/overcoming burnout: taking time every day to do something you love. Added benefit if it’s done with someone you love.

Preventing and overcoming burnout can happen in many different ways and the activity changes depending on the mood and stress level of myself and the family. But one thing is always true, cough snuggles fill my cup and prevent burnout. I choose a picture of my blanket. What you can see is the toddler on my lap. We love morning snuggles, it's our special Maddy and mama time while my husband sleeps we often choose a show or movie and just enjoy our coffee and chocolate milk. Other times the blanket wraps the entire family as I read a Dr. Seus story; using all the voice of course. Or it might wrap my husband and I while we chat and reconnect or sit in silence and binge watch our shows. The blanket and our couch represents time spent together.

  • The reason I chose this picture is: On a day when I see picture 1, I take a deep breath, go down to starbucks, get my favorite dark roast large coffee and sip on it, to mentally prepare myself for the full day of patients. Taking these 5 minutes out before the day starts helps me keep focused, stay efficient and avoid burnout. In the afternoon, If I feel start to feel fatigued and cannnot concentrate,  I will order another coffee at lunch, whether psychologically or physically, it starts to make me feel better so I can tackle the rest of the half day.  Thus, I avoid burnout.

Love. Support. Human touch. Teamwork. Family. Gathering at the dinner table, sharing stories and enjoying a stillness in an otherwise hectic lifestyle. When times are hard, fall back on loved ones. Go Team (insert family surname)!

I found a new hiking trail to go on and even though I had no idea where we were going I felt safe and purposeful. We completed the trail with smiles on our faces. It was a beautiful day. I felt at peace. This is a nourishing kind of isolation
