Decimals are one way to show part of a whole.

Decimal place value:

. tenths/hundredths/thousandths

READING the decimal correctly is important!

.4 = 4 tenths

.48 = 48 hundredths

.481 = 481 thousandths

Fractions are another way of showing part of a whole.

1/10 = 1 tenth

3/100 = 3 hudredths

890/1000 = 890 thousandths

READING the Fraction or DECIMAL properly is ESSENTIAL to converting them back and forth.

.4 is read as 4 tenths. How would you write 4 tenths as a fraction?

.75 is read as 75 hundredths.

The same can be said for converting between fraction and decimal:

  • First, turn the fraction into a decimal by dividing down.
    • Example ⅞ would be read as 7 divided by 8.
