Decimals are one way to show part of a whole.

Decimal place value:

. tenths/hundredths/thousandths

READING the decimal correctly is important!

.4 = 4 tenths

.48 = 48 hundredths

.481 = 481 thousandths

Decimal to Fraction

Fractions are another way of showing part of a whole.

1/10 = 1 tenth

3/100 = 3 hudredths

890/1000 = 890 thousandths

.75 is read as 75 hundredths.

Fraction to Decimal

The same can be said for converting between fraction and decimal:

• 6/10 is read as 6 tenths. How would you write 6 tenths as a decimal? .6
• 4/100 is read as 4 hundredths. How would you write 4 hundredths as a decimal? .04

Percents are always based out of 100!

But what happens when a fraction can’t be made equivalent to 100?

Fractions as Decimals - denominator 100

• First, turn the fraction into a decimal by dividing down.
• Example ⅞ would be read as 7 divided by 8.
