Matariki is the Maori New Year. Some people say it is the New Zealand Thanksgiving.

It is the time to remember the people who have died and to celebrate new life

Matariki is the Māori name for a group of stars they are called the seven sisters because they are seven stars. They can be seen all year, but disappear in April and rise again in late May or early June.

Matariki means the eyes of god mata ariki or little eyes mata riki.

Papatūānuku is the earth mother

The sons are God of Water, God of Wind and God of War.

When the God of Wind got angry about his brothers who tried to separate their parents he threw his tears in the sky and they turned into the seven stars. The seven sisters.

Another story says he threw his eyes in the sky and they turned into stars.

On matariki it is a good time to go fishing because the biggest stars shine so bright in the sky that it lights up the whole sea so you can see.
