    • For your Persuasive speech, your general purpose should be to persuade or convince

  • Specific Purpose: Is the overarching goal of your speech

CHAPTER 6: THESIS STATEMENTS

  • Thesis Statements = Central Idea
  • Thesis statements are the crux of your paper in ONE, declarative sentence
    • Appears in the speech introduction
    • Explains why the audience should care about your speech
  • Formula for thesis statements:

Ex: MLK’s “I Have a Dream” speech was the most important speech in the 20th century because it inspired all Americans to pursue racial harmony and influenced legislation and policy that still impacts our lives today.
