What is CIRANDAR?�We are a Circular Design and Education Lab.
�We are a Circular Design and Education Lab. We provide educational initiatives for children and youth about the potential of plastic waste recycling.
We share solutions and machinery developed (plastic shredder, plastic press) for alternative ways to process waste through open-source licenses.
We manufacture furniture using plastic purchased from waste picker cooperatives to stimulate the recycling chain and give waste a lasting purpose. Up to today, we have already recycled 5 tons of plastic in a community lab.

Where Do We Operate?
The project headquarters is located in the historical site of Olinda, at Casa Criatura, where we process waste into sheets and welcome the public for scheduled educational visits.
Currently, the project operates in Olinda, Recife, and Fernando de Noronha.
In Recife:
Rua Duque de Caxias in downtown Recife: Urban intervention with 2,500kg of recycled plastic into furniture for citizens.
Community of Pilar: Recreational equipment made with 1,500kg of plastic for the community.

PREPARATION
We used a wood chipper, normally used for agriculture production and at an affordable price, and adapted some parts to meet the needs of plastic crushing.
It worked successfully.

By opting for a tool already available on the market, we ensure access to both the equipment and a user manual as part of the safety setup.
The blades are securely enclosed in a safety-locked casing and feature an emergency stop button.

Structured in theoretical and practical classrooms, besides field visits, the educational component of the project involved 20 young people from a public school in Olinda. The recruitment of two students was made by the school management, which identified their 20 most engaged students.

03. IMMERSION
This educational activity involves an immersion into the theme of plastic for a group of young people, split into 6 modules. Youngsters create and prototype new artifacts using recycled plastic.

Educational extension courses in partnership with Universities are the focus for engaging design and architecture public and promote the creation of new open source products using recycled plastic, preventing it from reaching seas and rivers.

This machine also provides social technology, where we can connect with other recycling cooperatives that do not have this shredding process, and also receive direct donations of material.

The grinding mill also allowed us to manufacture sheets with color control and homogeneous alloys.

MATERIAL LIBRARY
By producing plastic flakes on our grinding machine, we are able to manufacture sheets with purer compounds, which significantly improves the final sheet product. We have created a material library with samples of the sheets we have already produced, which is being used as a showcase for educational activities.

IN THE PLATES MANUFACTURE
From using release agent for concrete forms, we switched to a 1000 viscosity fluid silicone and we are having excellent results. The sheets are smoother and shinier, in addition to making better use of the solution, making the project more sustainable.

Recognition
In 2023, our project received recognition from the National Water Agency (ANA) in the Future Sanitation Challenge, being awarded as one of the top three initiatives in the social category. As a result, we received funding of R$ 110,000 to drive the project's development.
In July of this year, during the second phase of the challenge, we were awarded by the Brazilian Agency for Industrial Development (ABDI) as winners in the social category. The project was highlighted for its high scalability potential, securing an investment of R$ 330,000 for its expansion and consolidation.
