Cinematography

  • Wide shot of the curtain in the light surrounded by darkness and Wide shot of Eva entering the room. The family photos are outside of the light to foreshadow how the happiness has been engulfed by darkness and evil. Darkness here, could also represent mystery and secrecy as we are yet to know what is on the other side of the curtains.

Mis-en-scene

  • Ramsay, McGarvey and Kinnear discussed the visual grammar of the film and one of the things brought up in this scene is the toned down natural hues
  • The curtains appear grey like, but have a bright light on them dragging our attention to them, which also makes us question what is behind the curtains
  • The idea of light and darkness in this scene, represents the binary opposition of good and evil.

Sound

  • The visuals of this scene are accompanied the sound of the sprinklers (non-diegetic) and shouting (diegetic)which we don’t know the cause of
  • By overlaying these two sounds together the audience is left quite anxious with the enigmatic image of the slowly blowing yet calming curtain
  • This juxtaposition matches the chaos of Kevin’s mind which we see late on in the film and this scene foreshadows it
