The webinars are designed to communicate information from experts on the processes of the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties to empower individuals and organizations at the intersection of open and climate to highlight the role of open in solving climate change.

This is also a space for organizations to catalyze conversations around the importance of open to addressing climate change and build momentum.

We are looking to open up all the papers cited in the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report, commonly referred to as the IPCC Report

The great news is that 60% of papers cited in the IPCC report are OA

But only 50% of those papers were made OA by the publisher and unfortunately only about 40% of those papers have a Creative Commons license.

Our goal is to see all of those cited papers available as OA on the publisher website with an open license.

Working with our friends at COKI and Sesame Open Science, we’ve pulled the list of cited papers and analyzed the OA status of the papers with DOIs that could be matched to CrossRef. We are looking at 45,669 unique journal articles, so we have just over 18,000 articles to make OA, and another few thousand that are already OA, but need an open license.

This does not seem insurmountable. There are approximately 200 publishers/journals represented by these 18,000 articles, some with just 1 or 2 papers to make OA, and then, as you’d imagine, we have the large publishers who have a few thousand papers.

PREPRINTS

Working with preprint servers and funders to increase the adoption of CC BY on preprints… including climate change research.

The last project I’ll talk about today as we think about some of the ways that CC is advancing open access is our project to openly license preprints. Preprints are complete drafts of scientific research that are publicly posted prior to formal peer review and are increasingly important as a more accessible vehicle for scientific dissemination. Out goal is to increase the adoption of CC-BY licenses on preprints to make them easier to share and re-use. This is becoming increasingly important as faster access to science is critical to solving some of the world’s greatest challenges. In time, we hope that major preprint servers will include licence information.. In parallel we are working with research funders to develop or update their open access policies to require a CC-BY licence on preprints.
