TOPIC 1 fish; did you know that fish can get sunburn because the U-v light can still penetrate the skin. Most fish reproduce by laying eggs though some fish such as great white sharks give birth to live babies called pups. The oldest known age for a fish was an Australian lungfish. In 2003, it was still alive and well at 65 years old.Fish evolved to swim in schools to better protect themselves from predators, improve their foraging and swim more efficiently. Unlike shoaling, in which fish merely swim loosely together, schooling requires coordinated body positions and synchronized movement. When they sense danger they fill their stomachs with water (or air if they are out of water). This exposes sharp spines that cover their bodies. This makes them less inviting for predators to catch. Their skin and some internal organs contain tetrodotoxins, which are highly toxic substances.

  • TOPIC 2 Cactus originates from the Greek name Kaktos. Kaktos is a Spanish artichoke or the “prickly plant of Sicily” as many refer to it in Greece.

The Greeks used the word cactus to refer to the spiky plant, which they compared to artichoke. However, it later emerged that the plant that they referred to as cactus was actually an artichoke and not a cactus and that the two plants had different characteristics. As you may know, it rarely rains in the desert. When it does rain, the rain is often light, and it may take many months for a desert to experience rainfall again. The desert sun is also extremely hot and dries up rainwater in a very short time.So how does a cactus survive without water for extended periods? To cope with the dry and hot conditions in the desert, cactus stores plenty of water whenever it rains.

TOPIC 3 did you know The word “rodent” actually derives from the Latin “rodere,” which means to gnaw. Food is important during the cold winter months for squirrels. It makes sense, therefore, that some species are able to smell food under a foot of snow. The squirrel will then dig a tunnel under the snow, following the scent to their (or another squirrel’s) buried treasure. Squirrels have been observed engaging in “deceptive caching.” This is where a squirrel digs a hole and vigorously covers it up again, but without depositing the nut. It seems this is done to throw off potential food thieves. They have accidentally contributed countless trees to our nation’s forests. If you ask me, that’s a pretty great reason to appreciate squirrels.

Make a Mind Map what you want to learn about the topic? (make a list)

-Why squirrels can scream?

-Can they survive without parents?

Write a purpose statement that clearly identifies your topic and course of study

For example: I want to learn how the endocrine system functions in humans. I will read books, watch videos, and interview my mom’s friend, who is an endocrinologist. I want to create a model of all the body parts that are associated with the endocrine system.

WRITE HERE: i want to learn how fast squirrels are compared to a cat, what does it mean when a squirrels why do they scream what do happy squirrels do

In Greek, the word squirrel means shadow tail.

In Addition to residing in the Eastern US, Eastern Gray Squirrels can be found in many Western states, “Facts About The United Kingdom.”

The most iconic behavior of squirrels is storing nuts and acorns for winter. ...

The hind legs of squirrels are double-jointed, which gives them the ability to run up and trees very quickly.

A male squirrel can actually smell a female in heat, from up to a mile away.

Squirrels communicate by using a variety of vocal calls and by scent marking. They twitch their tails to signal others that a potential danger is nearby.

squirrels can find food buried beneath a foot of snow,

a squirrel’s teeth never stop growing,

squirrels may lose 25 percent of there food to thieves,

they zigzag to escape predators

The smallest squirrel known is the African pigmy squirrel that is only 5 inches long from nose to tail. The largest type of squirrel is the Indian squirrel that grows to as much as 3 feet long.

Body

NOTES: mating season for squirrels is from February to May, with a 44-day gestation period. Generally, two to four young are born per litter.

  1. Squirrels have 4 toes on their feet, which are extremely sharp and used for gripping tree bark whilst climbing.
  2. They also have 5 toes on their back feet.
  3. With 285 species of squirrels, they can be found in every continent except Antarctica and Australia.
  4. Squirrels can eat their own body weight every week, which is roughly 1.5 pounds.
  5. Squirrels can fall from 30 meters high, without hurting themselves

Body

NOTES:

Squirrels eyes are positioned in a way which allows them to see behind them. Back in 2007, Iran claimed 14 squirrels found near the nation’s borders were actually spies.

Squirrels are clever creatures and can learn to navigate numerous obstacles to find the most efficient route to food, they’re also rather good at finding shortcuts.

1% of squirrels grow up with parents

They are highly intelligent creatures. They fake food burying in order to keep other squirrels, birds and predators from finding their actual food stash.

Speed

NOTES:

-Squirrels can jump a distance of up to 20 feet. They have long, muscular hind legs and short front legs that work together to aid in leaping.

-Squirrels have been proven to run at speeds of 20 miles per hour, however generally, most squirrels run half that speed,

-In the 2005 remake of “Charlie And, The Chocolate Factory” squirrels were real. For the squirrel scene, the squirrels were not CGI, but were actually real life and were professionally trained by The Nut Room Animal trainer Michael Alexander and his team who spent 19 weeks training these squirrels for this one scene.

In 1963, the city of Longview, Washington, has a bridge named Nutty Narrows. The 60-foot long bridge has turned the town into the squirrel-lovers capital of America. Longview now holds an annual Squirrel Fest in August every year The Native American symbol for preparation, trust and thriftiness, is the squirrel.

NOTES:

Squirrels communicate using a wide range of calls, such as territorial barks and ‘quacking’ noises, but their main form of communication is their tails. They use these as signalling devices, twitching them if they become suspicious of a threat.

Squirrels can run up to 20 mph and have padded feet which cushion jumps from up to 20 feet high. They can also use their fluffy tails like parachutes in order to balance themselves during high leaps.

Squirrels are one of the most important animals for helping the spread of oak trees. They store acorns in the ground but only recover around 70 per cent of them, allowing the forgotten acorns to grow into healthy trees.

Red squirrels were widespread in the UK until the 1940s but suffered a sharp decline in numbers and are now classified as an endangered species. Their threatened status is largely down to the rise of the grey squirrel population, due to their larger and more robust nature and transmission of the squirrel pox virus.

Squirrels can be categorised into three types: ground squirrels, tree squirrels and flying squirrels. Flying squirrels are able to glide through the air due to the flaps of skin which connect their limbs, providing a wing-like surface.
