Project #13
Lesson Plan
by Hilary Thames, Haley Smith, and Brantley Spillman
Grade 4 Mathematics: Fractions
Common Core Standard: Developing an understanding of fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers.
Tools Needed: Monday- textbooks, Smartboard and iPads per four students.
Tuesday- textbooks, Smartboard and iPads per four students.
Wednesday- textbooks, Smartboard, and iPads per four students.
Thursday- Smartboard and iPads per four students.
Friday- Smartboard, pizzas, toppings, and paper plates.
Monday Objectives:
Students will be able to:
-Identify fractions from a drawing
-Be able to draw fractions
Class Discussion: Introduce fractions to class. Using
textbook, go over examples of like denominators, unlike
denominators, and whole fractions.
Video: This Video is to further the students knowledge on fraction and give visual content.
Activity: During this activity, students will participate, as a whole class, using the smartboard.

Assessment/Homework: Instruct students to draw a picture of a fraction specific fraction such as ⅝. Use colors, patterns, and shape in complete this assignment.
Monday: What is a Fraction?
Tuesday’s Objectives:
Students will be able to
CCSS.Math.Content.4.NF.B.3a Understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole.
-Add fractions with like denominators
-Subtract fractions with like denominators
Tuesday: Adding & Subtracting Fractions
Class Discussion: Introduce students to adding and subtracting fractions. Use textbooks to discuss.
Video: This video goes into detail adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators

Activity: In this activity, students will break off into groups of four and work at their table on the following activity. This provides a grade at the end and students will be able to work together to get the correct answers.

Assessment/Homework: Teacher will create a worksheet using the link below and print off for students to do at home on their own. Make sure you print a answer key.
Wednesday Objectives
Students will be able to:
CCSS.Math.Content.4.NF.B.4 Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction by a whole number.
-Multiply fractions to get the product
-Reduce fractions into its simplest form.
Wednesday: Multiplication
Class Discussion: Introduce kids to multiplying fractions. Use textbooks to discuss.
Video: This video discusses multiplying fractions into further detail. It will allow students to work with the video and become more familiar with fractions.

Assessment/Homework: Teacher will create a worksheet using the link below and print off for students to do at home on their own. Make sure you print a answer key.
Thursday Objectives
Students will be able to:
-Review the lessons learned this week such as what fractions are, how to add and subtract them, and how to multiply and reduce them.
-Take quizzes to test their knowledge on fractions.
Thursday: Review/Quizzes
Activity #1: What is a Fraction?
Quiz #1:What is a Fraction?
Activity #2: Adding and Subtracting Fractions
Quiz #2: Adding and Subtracting Fractions
Activity #3: Multiplying and Reducing Fractions
Quiz #3: Multiplying Fractions
Friday’s Objectives:
-Students will be able practice fractions using Project Based Learning
-Students will put toppings on pizza on specified parts of the whole.
Friday: Project Based Learning
Video: Students will watch this video using the Smartboard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvFv63EAZSc
Activity: Students will be broken into groups of four, give pizzas, one pizza per each group, and asked to add certain toppings to a certain fraction of the pizza and asked to cut the pizza into certain fractions. After, students will be allowed to eat the pizzas.
The End Result!
In the end of our lesson plan, we want our students to have a full understanding of fractions: what a fraction is, how to add them, how to subtract them, how to multiply them, how to reduce them, and how to apply them to everyday lives. Students will be tested on the material individually but will continue to work in groups to grasp a clearer understanding.
How Will We Grade?
