IB ASSESSMENT

HOW IS IT DIFFERENT?

WHY DOES IT MATTER?

12 of 22

IB AND COLLEGE CREDIT

You can earn credits from IB courses based on performance on IB exams.

NC public universities guarantee at least 3 credit hours for: Score of 4 or higher on HL exams, score of 5 or higher on SL exams.

Private universities and out-of-state universities will all develop their own credit award policies. Check individual school websites to see what they recognize.

Higher scores can earn you additional credits. A 6 or a 7 may earn you 6-8 credits instead of 3.

Some courses may be eligible for “general elective” credit instead of a subject credit. That’s ok! It’s still money you won’t have to pay for a college elective.

HOW TO EARN RECOGNITION

Diploma Programme

    • Earn a D or higher on your Extended Essay
    • Earn a D or higher on your TOK essay + TOK exhibition
    • Complete CAS with reflections
    • Earn a minimum of 24 points on your IB exams combined.
      1. At least 12 points must come from HL exams
      2. At least 9 points must come from SL exams

HOW DOES SCORING WORK?

Final marks range 1-7

    • All scores are comprised of scores on multiple components.
    • Most components are “externally assessed” - graded by IB
    • One component is “internally assessed” - grade by the teacher, moderated by IB

Typical scoring breakdown

Paper 1 - 20%

Paper 2 - 25%

Paper 3 - 35%

Internal Assessment - 20%

Exam scores are released in early July

The State of NC pays for students to take IB exams.

Cost is $126.50 per subject.

Students must complete all components, including the internal assessment to earn a score.

Failure to complete a component, or academic malpractice, results in a financial obligation to pay the state back for that exam.

The rise of AI has necessitated a process for students to prove the providence of their own work. As such, we have instituted the following policy to protect students from false accusations of AI use:

    • All IB assessment tasks must be completed in CMS Google Drive with editing permissions shared with the teacher.
    • Students must submit the final product as a Google file (not as a Microsoft Word file, not as a PDF).
    • Students must complete all relevant pre-work prior to submission of the final product.
      • All pre-work associated with an IB assessment should be uploaded to ManageBac, including photographs or scanned images of work completed by hand.
      • Failure to submit pre-work may result in withdrawal from the IB exam and any relevant fines ($130/subject).
    • If any AI tool has been used for any means (including for spelling or grammar checks), an AI Acknowledgement Statement must be included in the Works Cited of the assignment explaining exactly how AI was used, which tool was used, what prompt was used, and the date accessed.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

IS IB FOR MY CHILD?

IS IB WORTH THE STRESS?

WILL IB HELP THEM GET INTO A BETTER COLLEGE?

WHAT DOES THE IB WORKLOAD LOOK LIKE?

HOW CAN WE (AS PARENTS) SUPPORT OUR IB STUDENT?

IB STUDENTS DEVELOP STRONG STUDY SKILLS. THE PROGRAMME FORCES TIME MANAGEMENT, CRITICAL THINKING, AND INDEPENDENT RESEARCH—SKILLS THAT PAY DIVIDENDS AT UNIVERSITY AND BEYOND.

THE STRESS IS MANAGEABLE WITH THE RIGHT SUPPORT. MOST IB STUDENTS WHO STRUGGLE DO SO BECAUSE OF POOR TIME MANAGEMENT OR LACK OF SUPPORT, NOT BECAUSE THE PROGRAMME ITSELF IS IMPOSSIBLE.

THE IB IS WORTH IT FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE REASONABLY ORGANISED, CURIOUS ACROSS MULTIPLE SUBJECTS, AND WILLING TO PUT IN CONSISTENT EFFORT. IT’S NOT WORTH IT IF YOUR CHILD IS BEING PUSHED INTO IT AGAINST THEIR WILL, OR IF THEY’D GENUINELY BE HAPPIER AND MORE SUCCESSFUL IN A DIFFERENT PROGRAMME.
