Tips for identifying buildings

39 of 49

Some tips for recognizing a building

Roof Color: Many buildings have a different color to the color on the ground

Building Shadows: Most buildings have some height to them, so they will cast a dark shadow next to themselves on the ground

40 of 49

Some tips for recognizing a building

Straight Edges: Most buildings are square, rectangle, or blocky shapes (C, L, or U shaped)

Perfect Circles: Most buildings have some height to them, so they will cast a dark shadow next to themselves on the ground

41 of 49

Some tips for recognizing a building

Roads / Paths Nearby: Most people need to leave their home at some point, and most use a road or path to do so!

42 of 49

Tips for identifying if a building is well mapped

43 of 49

Some tips for recognizing a well mapped building

Building shape: Most buildings are very common shapes - squares, rectangles, blocky shapes, or perfect circles. If it looks wonky, it’s likely not well mapped.

Building Size: Make sure the building is not oversized or undersized. This is a common mistake with new mappers!

This building looks correct in both shape and size. It is well mapped!

44 of 49

Some tips for recognizing a well mapped building

Building location: The map of the building should rest exactly on top of the footprint of that building - not off to the side. Make sure the building shape is placed exactly where the building is located on the ground.

This building is mapped exactly where this building exists on the ground

There is no building here. This is not well mapped.

45 of 49

Some tips for recognizing a well mapped building

Is that a building or something else?: Some mappers map trees as buildings. Here is an example of what that looks like.

On no! That is not a building, but a tree. It is green, has a rougher outline than a circular building would have, and the shadow is rough, not smooth.

46 of 49

Some tips for recognizing a well mapped building

Square corners and perfect circles: Buildings should not look wonky. They should have 90 degree angles, straight edges, or be perfect circles.

This building is not squared, and therefore is not well mapped.

Wow, now that is a gorgeous perfectly round building. This is well mapped!
