HOW TO INTEREST MORE GIRLS IN TECH

2 of 9

PROBLEM STATEMENT

  • Girls are underrepresented and overlooked in the technology field
  • Need a way to cheaply introduce girls to computer science in order to get more girls interested and working in this field
  • Women bring different skills to the field than men, such as an inviting atmosphere, creativity, emotional intelligence, and teamwork

INTERACTIVE WEBSITE

DESCRIPTION:

  • Website that includes...
    • Coding activities: Kids can code games they already know and love (ex. Flappy Birds and Minecraft)
    • Videos about coding and careers
    • Step-by-step instructions and then practice simulations
  • Ex. Code.org
  • Students can make a free account on the website that tracks progress

IDEAS:

  • When students are done with their work, allow them to play games on the website, that can track their progress.
    • Students can be eligible for some kind of reward for achieving Milestone X
    • Teachers can designate specific days where classes have time to interact with the website so there are enough computers

  • Can be all-girls or anyone
  • Get a teacher(s) or someone else to lead

IDEAS:

  • Team building activities
  • Videos about coding
  • Guest speakers
  • Usage of an interactive website such as code.org or a new one you create
  • Robotics
  • Technologies like Canva, Powerpoint, etc...
  • Makey Makey kits

MARKETING IN SCHOOLS

IDEAS:

Create a workbook that schools can buy that includes: inspirational posters, links to videos to show, instructions on how to set up a club/activities for that club, and more

  • Hour of Code
  • Guest speakers of women in technology
  • Hang posters in classrooms and in the hallways that promote coding to girls
  • Show videos during class of young coders

OVERVIEW

  • All viable options depending on the the available resources the school has.

  • Each option goes hand in hand:

    • Marketing is important for...
      • the program to run smoothly
      • target the right audience
      • ensure there is a good number of interested participants.

    • The interactive website can be introduced in classes to spark interest in an afterschool program.

    • The afterschool program can also utilize the website as one of the activities.
