Huichol Yarn Painting

Today we will learn about the Huichol people of Mexico.  The Huichol People live in the Northwestern part of Mexico and make beautiful artwork by pressing colorful beads or yarn into boards or shapes covered in sticky beeswax.

The artwork created by the Huichol feature patterns and symbols that are important in their culture.  �

The Huichol often have Mandalas in their artwork.  A Mandala is a circular picture base on radial symmetry. Radial symmetry means it is the same from top to bottom as well as from side to side.

Until recently, the Huichol people did not have a written language, so the images they created told the stories of their ancestors, beliefs and laws.

Today, we will use yarn like the Huichol to create our own symbols of the sun using Radial Symmetry.
