Trivory - Schedules and Flex Time
Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School
We are named after someone who devoted her entire life to serving others, fighting for justice, and standing up for those who were mistreated. Part of being an IBW Guardian is our shared commitment to take care of ourselves and each other. This is the spirit of the school-wide lessons today. We want you, our students, to be empowered and informed with knowledge and understanding that will help you to be successful in our school community.

Lesson 2 (2nd period) - September 6th
Hallway Expectations, Attendance Policy, and Restroom Behavior
Hallway Expectations
Discuss:
What are 3 reasons you think we are highlighting hallway expectations
We want students to learn and we know when students are out of class they are missing opportunities to practice and engage with the learning of that particular subject. Increasing student engagement is one of our schoolwide goals this year, so we notice when students are out of class and we will be asking students why they are avoiding class and problem solve so the behavior doesn’t continue for the betterment of student learning and success.
Hallway Expectations & Consequences
Students Will:
Staff Will (Progressive Action Steps):
Students must have a hall pass (only 2 options)
Attendance
Discuss:
Does Attendance Matter?
Why? Or Why Not?
We think attendance is super important! We miss you when you’re not here, really, we do. You are a part of a community here, we want you to learn and have fun and connect with your peers and teachers. When you are not here, your classmates miss out on your thinking and contribution to their learning. We all learn from each other, so try to be here, every day that you can.

Restrooms
What are your biggest concerns about using restrooms here at Ida B?
We’ve set up some basic guidelines for restrooms for student privacy and safety. Please review the next slide.
Restroom Behavior Expectations and Consequences
Restrooms are a phone and camera free environment for the sake of everyone’s privacy and safety. Cameras and cell phones cannot be in use while you are in the bathroom.
Single-Use Restrooms:
These bathrooms provide a safe, private facility. Only 1 student allowed at a time.
Multiple-Use Gendered Restrooms:
Bathrooms are not for social gatherings. School staff members will be monitoring all the bathrooms this year and will escort you to class as needed. If you notice vandalism in the bathroom, please report to a staff member so we can keep our bathrooms clean.

Cell Phones and Chromebooks
Cell phones & chromebooks: School-wide Policy
We LOVE our phones…
Maybe a little too much :)
It’s okay to take a mental, social and physical break from our phones.
Cell Phones - Research is out and this is what we know about too much cell phone use:
This is our ‘why’
Ida B. Wells School-wide Goal this Year:
Increase Student Engagement
Ida B. Wells school-wide cell phone practices and expectations
What about ear buds or smart watches?
What happens if we don’t follow these expectations?
The adults in this building have no desire to get into power struggles over cell phones, earbuds, smartwatches or chromebooks. However, we do want each and every student to fully engage and understand why we are instituting this new policy. Your mental health is too important to us to continue to allow these distractions to get in the way of your health and academic success.
This is how we will respond to students not meeting these schoolwide expectations:

Anti-Harassment and Bullying Policy
In the PPS Students Rights and Responsibilities Handbook 2023-24, please go to p. 19, 21, and 23 to see the policy on harassment and/or bullying. You will see the words “harassment or bullying” in the center of the page. There is more information about sexual harassment (Title IX) that we will review during period 7 today.
On p. 20, 22, and 24 are the disciplinary levels for students who have harassed or bullied another student.

Emotional and Mental Health Supports
Social, Emotional, and Mental Health Supports
There are multiple ways to access supports at our school!
Your school counselors are located in the Main Office. Drop-in times are before school, at lunch, at FLEX or after school. For a longer meeting you can schedule usually a same day appointment (See Sharon Dailey, our counseling secretary to schedule). You can also email your counselor if you have a quick question.
If a student is in crisis, a counselor will be available to see them immediately.
IBW Counseling Team:
What do school counselors do related to social, emotional and mental health?
Counselors can help you work through emotional and mental health related challenges and refer you and your family to outside resources. We can assist you in navigating challenging friendships, relationships or issues arising during the school day.
We have a social worker!
Britni Locke supports student struggling with mental health (anxiety, depression, trauma, substance abuse, etc.), relationship problems with peers or at home, emergency needs (housing, food, clothing, health care, etc.) and more!
Want to meet with our social worker?
