Welcome to Conceptual Physics

Physics studies questions related to matter and energy, and utilizes mathematics to predict the behavior of matter and energy. Both qualitative and quantitative laboratory experiences are provided in order that students can manipulate apparatus, make observations, gather data, process data, and interpret this data to form conclusions.

Units Covered:

1D Kinematics, 2D Kinematics, Newton’s Laws, Conservation of Momentum, Work Energy Theorem, Rotational Motion, Universal Gravitation, Electricity, Electromagnetic Induction, & Waves.

Textbook:

Conceptual Physics. Hewitt, Third Edition, 1999

Classroom Expectations:

Ask questions frequently even if you don’t know exactly how to phrase it.

Grading Procedures:

A total points system is used to calculate grades. Grades are determined by dividing an individual student’s accumulated point total by the total number of points possible.

Homework: Assignments will be posted in Schoology. There will be times where we submit on Schoology and turn in by hand in class. Play attention to directions.

Academic Assistance

M-F: 7:25am-7:50am

M-Th: 3:00pm – 3:40pm

Prep Periods: 4^th & 7^th

Students must ask by appointment for assistance via email or during class, to get help during Homeroom. Students need to be proactive so that they can get help when they need it. If need to meet during Cherry Homeroom we can arrange that once a week.

Absent/Late Work:

Schoology will be updated weekly. You have full access to lab presentations and notes. Please check Schoology to see what you missed. Most assignments are digital but some are physical handouts.

Labs and quizzes must be made-up prior to the last day of the unit. LATE WORK: 80% deduction/assignment after collection in class or time due digitally on Schoology.

Late work can be submitted up until the end of each quarter. A “0” in the gradebook for a missing assignment will be changed WHEN it is submitted.

CLASSROOM NORMS FOR TECHNOLOGY

Students will save/turn in work as needed and completely put away iPads when directed to do so. Many labs and assignments require students to digitally share data, so shared documents should be edited carefully to avoid lose of data.

Students will follow along digitally during activity explanations and use Schoology links to external simulations as instructed by the teacher.

PHONES WILL BE SILENT AND PUT AWAY

Students will be expected to describe and explain physics principles conceptually through tests, “hands-on” activities, formal laboratory reports, and semester projects. There will be significantly less math computation and theoretical aspects than in AP Physics.

The Road to Success

The best way to succeed in physics is to ask questions, participate fully, take notes, attend class, and complete assignments. I also additionally feel that reading assigned text is vital to your success. Extra credit opportunities will occasionally be available. If you need help, please ask.
