Winter Celebrations Around the World
New Year’s Day
January 1st is considered the first day of the New Year for people who observe the Gregorian calendar. It is celebrated over a span of 26 hours as the clock strikes midnight in different countries and time zones.
Santa Lucia’s Day
St. Lucia's Day is a warm, bright celebration on December 13th in countries with only a few precious hours of daylight in winter, such as Sweden. Children sing songs dressed in white gowns. The girls wear a crown of lights and a red sash, the boys carry stars. Traditionally, the eldest daughter brings her family coffee and saffron buns.
