Winter Celebrations Around the World

    • The Chinese New Year is welcomed with clean homes, gatherings, rituals and feasts. Specific years are represented by one of the 12 zodiac animals and 2022 will be the Year of the Tiger.

  • Christmas on December 25th is the Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. It is welcomed with lights and decorations, the giving of gifts, going to church, family gatherings and feasts.

  • Diwali is the biggest festival in the Hindu calendar. Also known as Deepavali, the "Festival of Lights“, it symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Celebrated over five days with glowing lights, gift exchanges, rituals and special foods, it is based on the lunar calendar and was celebrated from November 2–6 in 2021.

Winter Celebrations Around the World

  • Epiphany is a Greek and Russian Orthodox commemoration of the visit of the Magi (the three kings) to the birth of Jesus Christ. Celebrated on January 6, it marks the end of the Christmas season.

  • Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish festival of lights commemorating the miracles of faithful Jews when they reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. A menorah holds eight candles. When an additional candle is lit each evening, prayers are recited and, in some countries, gifts are exchanged. In 2021, Hanukkah is from sunset November 28 to sunset December 6.

  • Kwanzaa is celebrated around the world by people of African descent. The one-week long holiday brings together families, communities and people from various lifestyles to celebrate their common heritage. Kwanzaa will be celebrated from December 26 through January 1, 2022.

Winter Celebrations Around the World

New Year’s Day

January 1st is considered the first day of the New Year for people who observe the Gregorian calendar. It is celebrated over a span of 26 hours as the clock strikes midnight in different countries and time zones.

Santa Lucia’s Day

St. Lucia's Day is a warm, bright celebration on December 13th in countries with only a few precious hours of daylight in winter, such as Sweden. Children sing songs dressed in white gowns. The girls wear a crown of lights and a red sash, the boys carry stars. Traditionally, the eldest daughter brings her family coffee and saffron buns.
