Mission of the Columbiana County ESC Business Advisory Council:

​

To create a partnership among education, business, and the community that will advise and empower school districts to provide the education and experiences for students to achieve the relevant, in-demand skills necessary to become successful and productive citizens of our community.

​

Basics of Setting Up a Business Advisory Committee

• Find and approach representatives from local businesses.
• Ask about their needs and use their time well.
• LISTEN!
• Share the good things that your schools are doing.
• Find out what happens to your students after graduation. (Example: Student Tracker https://www.studentclearinghouse.org/colleges/studenttracker/)
• Inventory existing programs and make connections between business and education for the benefit of students planning for a career.
• Base your initiatives on your student demographics combined with your local business needs.

BAC Meetings

• Based on our numbers and making each meeting meaningful and relevant, the BAC has created 3 subcommittees that meets outside of our 4 quarterly meetings (August, November, February, May).
• Governance Committee
• School Business Partnership Committee
• Post-Secondary Committee

• The subcommittees are formed on a short term basis to assist in the planning or implementation of a project.

Governance Committee Responsibilities

• Support and Advise the ESC Superintendent on the structure and membership of the BAC.

​

• Provide a recommendation to the BAC regarding any proposed change to the Bylaws.

​

• Monitor and share data on Columbiana County’s Economic and Educational needs.

​

• Information shall be gathered on specific skills, interests, credentials, and apprenticeship opportunities that students need to succeed in the workplace and report data to Business Advisory Council.

​

• Publicize and communicate local economy and job information.

​

School Business Partnership Committee Responsibilities

• Foster relationships between schools and business to increase participation in apprenticeships, internships, and credentialing.

​

• Encourage utilization and creation of problem-based learning activities in schools.

​

• Create engaging activities & opportunities for students and families to learn about job opportunities in our community.

​

• Coordinate technology between business and education.

​

• Bridge the lifestyle awareness gap.

​

Post-Secondary Committee Responsibilities

• Collaborate to address the immediate employment and training needs of business and industry. (i.e. Apprenticeships; Job Training Programs; Credentialing etc.)

​

• Develop a prospectus of training and credentialing opportunities for residents seeking employment or job enhancement.

​

• Develop a working relationship among business, labor and education personnel.

​

• Facilitate communication between secondary, post-secondary and business-industry.

​

• Facilitate communication with post-secondary, parents, and students.

2022-2023 BAC Focus

• Our year started with a countywide teacher Professional Development day featuring Mark Perna who discussed the importance of education and business working together to prepare the future workforce. Over 500 teachers and staff heard his message.
• More districts are employing Career Counselors to work with students in career exploration and planning.
• Districts will begin utilizing YouScience with students to build career plans.
• Participation in the 6 county Skilled Trades Expo for high school students.
• Collaboration with the Columbiana Ohio State Extension Office to provide an Agricultural Expo for county students.
• Collaboration with Congressman Bill Johnson to provide a Manufacturing Your Future day for select 10th graders.
• Planning and collaborating in Career Fairs for students.
• Continued job training and work sites for our Transition program students.

Partnership with SilverApple

​

• Partnering with the CCESC starting in 2017, SilverApple is an organization that brings together schools and businesses to influence learning in the classroom through relevant, applied, interdisciplinary strategies that are focused on real business problems.

​

• Educators work hand in hand with businesses to develop student challenges that promote 21st century skills in collaboration, problem solving, critical thinking and the use of technology.

​

• SilverApple engages educators in professional development that promotes STEM (Strategies That Engage Minds) activities around the business challenge.

Manufacturing Your Future and the Skilled Trades Expo

Kids STEAM University at KSU Salem

• Formed in 2018 with a partnership between the CCESC and Kent State University- Salem campus.
• Over 40 local businesses, agencies, and schools participate and provide a hands-on STEAM activity for students to complete at individual stations.
• Our event was held this year on Saturday, September 10th with over 25 exhibitors and over 175 students attending with their families.

CCESC Educator Summer Camp

• Our camp started in 2015 by the CCESC Curriculum Department.
• Teachers from around the county are invited to participate in the week long PD.
• Each day during the week, the group visited a local town or community and their local businesses, agencies, or historic sites.
• To date, we have visited over 40 locations in the county.
• Over 175 teachers have participated in the PD.
• Many of the places that we have visited are now a part of our Business Advisory Council.
• Due to COVID, our event has been put on hold.

Rocket Boys

• In 2021, teachers, students, and members of the Business Advisory Committee read the book Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam over the summer as a One Book, One Community idea.

​

• Group discussions, Zoom meetings with Cleveland NASA Glenn, rocket launchings, and a final Zoom session with the author, Homer Hickam, finished out the project.

​

​

The Columbiana County ESC Business Advisory Council was awarded the 4-star Excellence Award for the second year in a row in 2022.
