What is a dual credit course?

A dual credit course is one in which you may choose to earn college credit in your high school senior English class without having to take a comprehensive, high stakes test. From day one, you are enrolled in a college class your senior year. [This is not an AP course. You do not have to take an AP Test to earn credit]. Students who are not interested in earning dual credit may also take Honors College Speech to experience a college course while choosing to earn high school credit only.

How does taking a dual credit course save me time and money?

The cost of a single college course may be hundreds if not thousands of dollars after you graduate high school. By taking Honors College Speech in high school, the 3 college credits earned your senior year costs considerably less than taking the course on a college campus.

In addition to fulfilling a high school English requirement, this course also fulfills the Communications/Public Speaking requirement that a majority of colleges and universities have for all students in every major.

Dual credit courses also save you time. By earning college credit in high school, you may gain more flexibility in your college schedule and course load.

What if I’m not going to Indiana University?

Indiana University’s course transfers to most colleges in the country. This is why Lake Park chose to offer dual credit through IU. Locally, the course transfers to UIC, U of I, Loyola University, Elmhurst College, and ISU, among others. Other colleges and universities the course has recently transferred to include Purdue, University of Kentucky, U of W - Madison, and Alabama. Lake Park students will receive an official transcript from Indiana University - Bloomington and should check that the college or university they are applying to will accept the credits.
