Previously, the hardware certification came in the combination of Apple Certified Desktop Technician (ACDT) and Apple Certified Portable Technician (ACPT), but has been combined into a single hardware certification. Which is the ACMT certification.

What is ACMT Certification?

  • ACMT stands for Apple Certified Macintosh Technician
  • Verifies that a person can perform basic troubleshooting and repair of both desktop and portable Macintosh systems
  • Focuses on identifying and resolving common Mac OS X problems
  • Focuses on using Apple Service and Support products and practices to solve Macintosh hardware problems
  • There is only one level of certification

Why become certified?

  • Intended for Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) or Self Servicing Account (SSA)
  • Intended for persons motivated to demonstrate their knowledge of technician-level service and support skills
  • ACMT certification verifies skills and knowledge that may be sought by a prospective employer

How to get certified

Must pass two exams:

  • The Mac Service Certification Exam - Tests practical knowledge of effectively and safely troubleshooting and repairing Apple Macintosh systems, including displays.
  • Mac OS X v10.7 Troubleshooting Exam - Tests practical knowledge of Mac OS X, emphasizing troubleshooting of Mac OS X version 10.7, and applies knowledge of Mac OS X 10.7 toward identifying common Mac OS X issues

What is the format of the exam?

  • Multiple-choice questions with either a single response, or multiple responses
  • Hot-spot or interactive media questions that ask a candidate to click an area in an image
  • Apple also states "We adopt new testing technologies and question types periodically."
  • The time varies from one exam to another, but it will not exceed two hours under normal circumstances

How to prepare?

  • Apple suggests purchasing AppleCare Technician Training
  • It is one full year of online access to the same self-paced training curriculum that Apple provides for its Apple authorized service providers
  • There are other study guides from a variety of vendors

What about recertification?

  • ACMT certification is valid for one year from the date of certification
  • Technicians employed by AASPs or SSAs re-certify annually
  • Persons not employed by an AASP or SSA are not required to re-certify but Apple says that it is a good idea.
