A bit about Mind Waves

Run by and for people with lived experience of mental ill health

We share our stories and experiences to change things

This whole project is informed by our lived experience ( and sense of humour)

A bit about the project

Funded through SeeMe anti-stigma arts fund

We’re delighted that people are talking more about mental health

We wanted to focus on the extra stigma of living with serious, long term mental illness

We worked together to produce, design and narrate these animations

Group agreement

Anything else?

We’ll take turns to talk

Nobody has to share anything if you don’t want to.

You can turn your camera off if you like.

Remember, we’re all a bit fragile. Be aware of the impact of what you share.

The plan for today

Have a look at the animations we produced

We’ll talk about our understanding and experiences of stigma

Think about how we can reduce stigma

Animation one

Discussion points

What kind of stereotypes exist about people who live with serious long term mental illness?

How might services/ professionals/ policies accidentally make this worse?

What did the choice of animals in the animation make you think?

For some of us, it’s literally one day at a time

Animation two

Discussion points

Did your experiences during lockdown make you think differently about mental health?

What do you think made lockdown different for people with long-term experience of mental illness?

What did you take from the use of the pebbles in the animation?

Myths vs reality

Animation three

Discussion points

Where do you think these myths come from?

Self care and positivity: what did you take from the list of things people can try? Who gains comfort?

Why is it important to feel heard? What do you think it means to really hear someone?

What do you think needs to happen next to reduce stigma?
