Point England - History

Ngati Paoa are the local Iwi, and lived along the western side of the Tamaki River starting nearly 250 years ago (in 1780). This area was known as Mokoia.

European settlers described the area as “the greatest piece of farmed land in New Zealand” because of the food that was grown, and the health of the people they met.

Ngati Paoa signed the Treaty of Waitangi at a beach not far from Pt England called Karaka Bay.

Pt England School works closely with Ngati Paoa to make sure we look after the land (whenua) and the people (tangata) properly.
