HOw does a Digital Breakout work?

  • Either a Google Site or Google Slides are used to house the breakout
  • There is a problem or scenario for the user to “solve”
  • The “locks” are found in a Google Form
  • Each lock will have a clue or a specific stipulation and must be solved in order for the user to “break out”
  • Users need to explore the site, clicking on both obvious and hidden links to find clues that will help you “unlock” the codes

Things to Think about when Introducing your Class to Digital Breakouts:

  • Remind them, that as a general rule, digital breakouts employ a "theme", which can help them find clues or understand how the clues are connected.
  • Some clues are noticeable, others are hidden in plain sight.
  • Some digital breakouts have a very specific purpose, others are for fun while enhancing critical, 'out of the box' thinking, independence, and collaboration.
  • It’s not JUST about breaking out but about the process and attempt that counts!

Things to consider when creating your own Digital Breakout:

  • Select your theme and create and format a Google Site.
  • Create folders to house your forms, images and links so that they are all in one spot
  • Create a Google Form for your digital locks and embed the Form on the Site.
  • Use Data Validation to make sure users will have to give exact answers
  • Keep a record of the codes for all of the locks
  • Test out the form - Find some “beta-testers” to find any errors and fix the bugs.
  • Publish your Site and share! Create a shortened URL for your site to access your game easier.
  • Consider using AutoCrat for Certificates of Congratulations
