Quartering Act of 1765

  • March 24, 1765
  • Stated colonists would need to provide room and board, clothing, and food/drink for British Soldiers
  • Examples of locations: inns, barns, stables, ale or wine houses
  • Colonists reaction - saw this as another burden and responsibility to uphold

Declaratory Act of 1766

  1. Passed on March 18, 1766 - Parliament had the power to pass laws and tax the colonies.
  2. Repealed Stamp Act = Good news for colonists :)
  3. Declaratory Act quickly followed = Bad news :(
  4. Famous “in all cases whatsoever” - meant Parliament had the power to make major decisions in the colonies on anything they wanted

Townshend Act of 1767

-Enacted in June 1767- Included 4 parts:

  1. Forced NY to pay for Quartering Act expenses
  2. Taxes on glass, lead, paint, tea and paper
  3. More customs and searches were allowed by officers
  4. Lifted taxes on British Tea, made it more of a monopoly

-More Boycotts and Non-Importation Agreements were used by colonists to avoid paying these taxes

Colonists Reactions and Actions Taken

  • Formal and organized protests, Petitions sent to the King and Parliament
  • Boycott Goods that were taxed
  • Created Non-importation agreements where cities and colonies avoided bringing products or materials into their colonies (typically taxed goods)
  • Tarred and Feathered British Customs Officials
