The site is quite stunning. In a way it feels very alien – almost like looking at the surface of Mars. The ridiculous heat reminds you that you are definitely on Earth and definitely in the desert. The patterns in the sand look like something was left here. You can see hoofprints all around the site leading you to imagine the caravan that must have passed by here.

You decide that this was likely the crash site of a trade caravan’s main wagon.

Those walls were obviously not enough to keep them safe though as this clearly was where their journey ended. You decide to investigate further and begin to carefully dig up artifacts in the area. Your goal is to determine what this caravan was planning to do. Was it on a peaceful trade mission or one of conquest? If we can figure out its intent maybe we can figure out what happened to them and help to clear up some of the Fractures in this epoch.

There are tons more pages of texts and as you glance over them a few stand out as different from the rest. You pull out the best preserved page to get a closer look. You are surprised to find this page isn’t written in Arabic like the others. Instead it is written in Greek. It is a page from a book about space. This page is about the sizes of the sun and moon. You wonder why would an Arabian caravan have texts from Europe?

Greek one: In Greek, Tenth century

This is the oldest and best manuscript of a collection of early Greek astronomical works, mostly elementary, by Autolycus, Euclid, Aristarchus, Hypsicles, and Theodosius, as well as mathematical works. The most interesting, really curious, of these is Aristarchus's "On the Distances and Sizes of the Sun and Moon," in which he shows that the sun is between 18 and 20 times the distance of the moon. Shown here is Proposition 13, with many scholia, concerned with the ratio to the diameters of the moon and sun of the line subtending the arc dividing the light and dark portions of the moon in a lunar eclipse.
