Eni signs power purchase agreement with CFS

  • September 22nd - Multinational Energy company Eni signed a $1 Billion+ PPA with Commonwealth Fusion Systems for the power from its planned first ARC power plant in Chesterfield County, VA
  • Follows a similar agreement with Google earlier this summer and an additional $863 million Series B2 funding round

Russia commits to helping China overtake the US in nuclear power

  • China currently has 53.2 GW of installed nuclear capacity and plans to surpass the US installed capacity of 97 GW
  • Russia has already built reactors in China and plans to further collaboration
  • Alexei Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom, has said that China will develop a generation of closed fuel cycle reactors based on Russian tech

Oklo Breaks Ground

  • September 4th - Oklo announces phase one plans for a $1.68 Billion fuel recycling facility, the first of its kind in the US
    • Exploring plans with TVA for fuel recycling and new reactors
  • September 22nd - Oklo breaks ground on first Aurora powerhouse at Idaho National Lab
    • Part of DOE’s Reactor Pilot Program and expects one to be operational by July 4, 2026

Fusion Experts testify before House Energy Subcommittee

  • September 18th - The Energy Subcommittee held a hearing titled “Igniting America’s Energy Future: The Promise and Progress of Fusion Power.”
  • Participants called for further federal investment in research and workforce development (request for $10 billion)
  • Those testifying included UW-Madison Assistant Professor Stephanie Diem!

Nuclear Power in Wisconsin is here to stay

  • September 30th - The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has renewed the operating licenses of both Units 1 and 2 at Point Beach for an additional 20 years
  • Unit 1 will now be able to operate until 2050 and Unit 2 will be able to operate until 2053
  • Follows early talks of a new nuclear plant at the old Kewaunee plant site, to potentially begin operations in 2038
