Define CTE and

ROP Classes

Introduction

In this lesson, you will learn about CTE and ROP programs that exist to help students find the right pathway for them. You will analyze some of the available programs to determine which best suit you. In a group, you will explore the CTE 101 handbook and answer questions designed to help you understand what this resource offers. Finally, your team will design its own CTE course that you think others might be interested in taking. By creating your own CTE course, you will gain deeper insight into how these programs are designed to help students and gain valuable perspective in selecting one of these programs if you decide to take advantage of them in high school.

THINK ABOUT CTE AND ROP PROGRAMS

What is CTE and what are its goals?

The ultimate goal of Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs is to create a strong, capable workforce that continues to build upon itself.

Each state has adopted its own CTE program using 16 career pathways, each with dedicated model curriculum standards. These standards ensure that students learn the same type of information, regardless of where they attend school.

These standards "describe the fundamental knowledge and skills that a career-ready student needs in order to prepare for transition to postsecondary education, career training, or the workforce."

THINK ABOUT CTE AND ROP PROGRAMS

What kinds of programs do the districts around you offer?

1. Your teacher will share the names of some school districts in your area.

2. Do an internet search using the following phrase: “CTE programs in ___________ school district,” filling in the blank with the name of the district you want to research.

3. Investigate three different districts and use the provided graphic organizer to record your findings.

Which of these programs most interests you?

Circle the program for each district that interests you the most and identify when you would be able to participate in it.

    • Is it a Saturday program?
    • Would you have to attend in the evenings?
    • Do you continue going to regular school while enrolled in one of these programs?

How do I sign up for this type of program?

On each website, there should be a way to sign up or apply for any pathway or program that interests you.

Many of them will have links or buttons that will guide you to the application process or provide instructions on how to get into that program. If you're unsure of how to find it, don't hesitate to ask for help.

CONNECT DESIGN A CTE COURSE

Form a group of four and work together to design CTE courses for your local high school.

1. Each member will create their own career cluster, focusing on the types of jobs you would emphasize within the curriculum.

2. For each cluster, include a brief description of the course and when it will be scheduled. See the next slide for an example.

3. After designing your courses, your group will share your course offerings with the rest of the class in a brief presentation.
