What do we call this mark? (apostrophe). Right! Who can tell me what letter we’ve been seeing after the apostrophe? (s). Yes. But this word doesn’t have an apostrophe s, so it can’t mean ‘belonging.’ This word is different.

we will

What is this word? (we). What sound do these letters make?(/l/) Right! This word ‘we’ll as in ‘ We’ll be at school by nine.’ The word “we’ll’ is a contraction. A contraction is one word that is made by putting together two separate words and shortening them. What two words do you think make up the word ‘we’ll”? (various answers) We’ll is short for ‘we will’. But part of the word is missing. What letters are missing? (w and i) What did I put in place of the missing w and i? (apostrophe). When we write contractions, we put and apostrophe for the missing letters.

Let’s play a game. I’ll say a contraction and you try to guess the two words that make that contraction. Repeat using each word. Can also reverse the game by saying the two words and they name the contraction. (what’s, she’ll, can’t, he’s we’re, I’m, we’ve, they’re, you’re, didn’t, it’s, I’ll).
