Painting Projects

Art Fundamentals: Landscape_Acrylic

  1. Use your own photo(s) or at least 3 photos online that you have combined together
  2. Create 3 composition thumbnails using the rule of ⅓’s
  3. Draw best composition on newsprint to be transferred to canvas
  4. Tone canvas with a gray acrylic + acrylic medium
  5. Practice: Paint a gray scale from 0% - 100%
  6. Paint Monochromatic Landscape in black and white using acrylic paint
  7. Glaze and scumble color in transparent layers

Advanced Classes: Landscape (real or fantasy/surreal)_OIL

(Drawing & Painting: Traditional Oil, Advanced Art & Art Projects: Water Soluble Oil)

  1. Toned background studies (toning helps see light values better) Once the tone is completely dry, you can paint over it with acrylic or oils. Toning with just a small bit of water.

Burnt Sienna (good for landscapes, favorite of many artists)

Red (good for green areas)

Orange (good for skies so the blue has a punch)

Ultramarine Blue + Orange to make a neutral gray (good for seascapes or overcast)

  • Create 3 composition thumbnails drawings based on BOTH the rule of ⅓’s AND SIMPLIFICATION to enhance your dominant focal point and add ARTISTRY to your work.
  • Choose your color scheme based on the toning studies, and begin!

Move from representational reality to ART

Changes made by the artist are more important than representational reality:

  1. The artist must enhance, simplify, and transform a scene to be considered ART.

In other words… notice what the artist chose to NOT PAINT
