  • INVESTING is the act of committing money to something with the expectation of obtaining income or profit, generally in STOCKS, BONDS or MUTUAL FUNDS

  • INVESTING is a long-term commitment and is the key to building weath.
  • One of the main reasons to INVEST is to offset INFLATION

  • INFLATION is the rate at which prices for goods and services increase over time. as prices go up, your money is able to purchase less.

  • How much you can purchase with $1 is called PURCHASING POWER.

  • We lose PURCHASING POWER every year due to inflation.

STOCK BASICS

A STOCK represents shares of ownership of the assets and earnings of a company.

    • You can buy Stock in any publicly traded company
    • Most stocks trade on:
      • NYSE (New York Stock Exchange)
      • NASDAQ (National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations)
        • Technology Stocks trade on NASDAQ

It is INVESTING in a business. When you buy stock, you become a PARTIAL OWNER of that company.

The VALUE of your investment can go up or down. If the company does well your stock will INCREASE. If the company does bad your stock will DECREASE.

STOCKS are more risky than BONDS. Both experience VOLATILITY (Up and Down)

MUTUAL FUNDS are probably the easiest and least stressful way to invest because of DIVERSIFICATION (allows you to spread your investments over a greater number of stocks and/or bonds. A drop in the value of one investment may be offset by a gain in another.)
