Warm Up Question: List two organelles and their functions.

My Answer:

Learning Target:

Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways parts of cells contribute to the function.

Success Criteria:

  • HW: Finish rough Draft

Lysosomes

A lysosome break down excess or worn-out cell parts. They may be used to destroy invading viruses and bacteria. If the cell is damaged beyond repair, lysosomes can help it to self-destruct in a process called programmed cell death, or apoptosis.

Tay-Sachs

The lysosomes produce enzymes that digest worn out parts. If someone has Tay-sachs they do not produce this enzyme. This most likely is present upon birth. Babies usually will live to be 3-5 years old.

Cell Membrane

The purpose of the cell membrane allows proteins, water, and other nutrients in and out of the cell. If the cell membrane does not work properly, problems arise.

New research has found that people with Alzheimer's disease cell membranes do not work properly. They allow fatty substances in to the brain cells and they create a plaque build up.

Name that organelle

This organelle stores water, food molecules, cellular waste products, and other cellular substances.

8 of 25

Name that organelle

This organelle makes protein and comes from the nucleolus of the cell.

9 of 25

Name that organelle

This organelle gets rid of cell waste and worn out parts.

Name that organelle

Mrs. Rakiecki’s favorite organelle….Provides energy for the cell.

Cell City

If we were to make an analogy comparing the school to a cell. The nucleus would be like what of the school?

What is an Analogy?

Examples:

The drums were as loud as thunder.

Finding the dining room in the mansion was like walking through a maze.

He was as funny as a clown.

Cell Analogy Project

  • First decide if you want to use a plant cell or animal cell.
  • What are you comparing your cell to?
  • Make a list of the organelles you have to use.
  • Write in analogies for each organelle.
  • On your paper you will draw your analogy and then compare that to the part of the cell.

14 of 25

How to write your analogies

  • “The nucleus is like a brain because it controls and coordinates the activities of the whole cell in the same way the brain controls and coordinates the activities of the body.”

Vacuole

(pic)

Stores water, waste products, food and other cellular substances.

The vacuole is in both, plant and animal cells.

The vacuole is larger in a plant cell.
