Attendance

RCW 28A.225.010

The state law for mandatory attendance, called the Becca Bill, requires children from age 8-17 to attend a public school, private school, or a district approved home school program. Children who are under 7 years old are not required to be enrolled in school, however, once a child is enrolled after the age of 5, the student must attend full-time.

Students must be marked present for 3 or more periods a day at Hazen to be considered present.

Important Codes:

  • T= Tardy
    • Student arrived less than 10 minutes late to class.
  • L= Late
    • Student missed between 10 minutes and up to 50% of the class period.
  • W= Unexcused Absence
    • Student missed 50% or more of the class period.
  • E= Excused Absence
    • Student was absent but was excused.

10 of 38

Attendance

  • Missing 10 percent (just two days a month or about 18 days in a year) increases the chance that your student will not read or master math at the same level as their peers.

  • By 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school.

  • By 9th grade, regular and high attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.

11 of 38

Attendance

BECCA BILL

  • After 7 unexcused absences in a 30-day period and not later than 15 cumulative in a school year
    • File truancy petition with Juvenile Court
    • RCW 28A.225.035

Attendance

Every Day Counts! The better a student's attendance in 9th grade, the higher the probability that they will graduate on time.

Attendance is one of the most powerful predictors of academic success, and having your student in their seat, ready to learn for the entire school day will benefit them, their classmates, and our whole school community. We know that there are a wide variety of reasons that students are absent from school, from health concerns to transportation challenges, and much more.  Overview of Attendance  We track attendance daily, to notice when your student is missing from class, communicate with you to understand why they were absent, and identify barriers and supports available to overcome challenges you may face in helping your student attend school. For more information visit the Hazen attendance page: hazen.rentonschools.us/for-families/attendance

How can we work together? We ask that you communicate absences, late arrival, or early release with our attendance office to ensure that our attendance special specialists can support you and your student(s).  ☎️ Attendance Phone Line:(425) 204-4210📧 Attendance Email:  hazen.attendance@rentonschools.usYou can report your students absence 24 hours, please note that to due to the amount of calls and emails, it may take 48 hours to update your student’s attendance record.
