What is Financial Aid?

Money borrowed to pay for tuition, supplies, and other fees associated with school.

This must be paid back!

Money gifted by the government to pay for tuition, supplies, and other fees associated with school.

This will not be paid back!

Money that is gifted to a student for special skills, talents, qualities, or academic achievements.

Schools, corporations and other private entities can offer this.

This will not be paid back!

Tuition and Fee waivers are assistance that lowers the amount the student must pay.

Tuition waivers aid students with the cost of tuition.

Fee waivers aid students with any additional fees the school may charge.

Students will still have to cover the remaining costs.

What type of aid could I receive?

Work / Service

based aid

Federal Work Study: Work that a student will get paid an hourly wage from their financial aid.

Dream Act Service Incentive Grant (DSIG): Volunteer work or community service hours that students receive a grant for completing.

Steps to Apply

CA Dream Act

Application

Student

    • Students will need to create an account with the CA Student Aid Commission (CSAC) to apply
    • Students will need:
      • Name
      • DOB
      • Create a username & password

    • If the student is required to provide their parent information then their parent will need to sign their application
    • At the end of the application, the student will select "Submit Parent Signature"
      • The parent will create a 4-digit pin that they will use each year to sign the student's application

FAFSA

Students

    • Students will need to create an account with the Federal Student Aid website by creating an FSA ID (username & password for FAFSA)
      • Social Security Number
      • Name
      • DOB
      • Create/answer challenge questions
    • Students will need to provide a phone number and an email then verify each of those.

Parents

    • Beginning with the 24-25 school year every parent of dependent FAFSA applicants will be required to create an FSA ID as well
      • Parents are not required to have an SSN to create an FSA ID

A student can receive UP TO an additional $14,228 in Cal Grant awards!

    • Undocumented students can now receive money for volunteer work/community service
    • Receive up to $4,500 per academic year ($2,250 per semester)
    • Eligible for up to 8 semesters or 12 quarters

If a student has a Cal Grant and enrolls in 12+ units they will also receive the Full Time Student Success Grant

Who qualifies?

Requirements are the following:

    • First-time
    • full-time college student
    • Must complete a FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application
    • Enroll in 12 units or more each semester
    • Must be eligible for in-state tuition

What does it do?

For the first two years!

    • Pays tuition
    • Pays fees
    • $250 book voucher
