What is Agriculture?

  • The business, science and practice of growing and selling plants and animals to be used for food, fiber, fuel and much more!

Agriculture is…

Food: That comes from plants and animals

Fiber: The raw material from plants and animals that we use to make clothing, rope and more. Fiber can be made from cotton, wool, wood and even corn

Fuel: made from crops like corn, soybeans and sugarcane. Fuels made from plants are called biofuels�����

Pharmaceuticals: many medicines are made from products produced by plants or animals

Forestry: that grows trees to be used as lumber to build homes, or into a variety of paper products.

Composting

  • The controlled natural decomposition of organic material, such as leaves, grass clippings, and kitchen scraps. Microorganisms break down these materials into compost
  • Compost energizes the soil food web, which is made up of microscopic bacteria and fungi, along with earthworms and many other life forms.
  • Many fungi form symbiotic (mutually rewarding) partnerships with plant roots, making it possible for plants to feed themselves more efficiently.
  • Creates a better environment for healthy plants.
  • Aids in the soil’s ability to retain moisture
