Any Obstruction

J-Channel:

  • J-cutter - 5/8”
  • For bottom, cut straight, use notches, and only need to go longer by width of face of J-trim
  • Although J-channel is preferred, utility channel can also be used

1

Bottom: Cut to width of window + 2x face width, notch both sides

2

Top: Cut to width of window + 2x face width - angle and flap down on each side

3

2 Sides: Cut to height of window + 2x face width - flap down bottom and

notch out top, and Angle the bottom

Trim and Siding

  • Mark level with laser level for location of starter strip. Mark top of starter strip, about 1” above siding, so that installed trim hangs down about 1” from siding.
  • Start white trim at carport.
    • Do Northeast corner post 2 sides, then top and side of railing. This determines where North side trim starts.
  • Door trim may need to be shimmed on underside of door.
  • Use finish nailer for trim?
  • Do Carport with band, edges of house
  • Then move on to Starter Strip

Joining Siding

  • Joining J-Channel
  • Splicing undersill trim - p18
    • “Should more than one length of undersill trim be required, make a splice as shown by cutting away 1” from the back of the undersill trim and lapping the sections, leaving a 1/4” space between nailing strip sections.”

Nails and Fasteners

  • Nails - must have a head at least 5/32” size - p7
    • Roofing nails can be used, ⅜” head or larger
    • Framing and roofing guns could possibly be used, but must have large head and must provide required offset for free motion of siding
  • Screws - for thin siding
  • Note that siding nailers cannot drive roofing nails and vice versa!
  • LP Smartside - 1.5 min penetration, 0.113 shank HDG - 0.27 head size
  • Trim installation

Resulting rant:

I'm ag-assed at another thing. Why are professionarts still using hammers for vinyl siding when siding nailers exist and save tremendous amounts of time? Most videos on Youtube show people hammering siding with hammers, and even a guy who 'invented' an offset hammer (to offset the nail for free motion of siding). Blows my mind! Then, it turns out that the siding nailers are even tarter. They don't even drive the large-head vinyl siding nails. So it appears the only way to do it is to use a roofing nailer, with roofing type nails, which are not ring shanked - so not optimal for siding. And using an offset adapter. But - some roofing guns appear to have built in height adjustment that does not rely on air pressure.

3a

Notes:

  • 3a before 3b. 5 placeholder is in place to determine length of 3a.
  • Length was 16’2” for 3b, so need a scab at 4.
  • 4 is with seam showing to ‘equalize x6 and x8’
  • Make sure underside of 3b is not showing, and make sure to make angle with 3a+3b
  • For 1 and 2 - align them. Would be easier with 1x instead of ⅜ so we could nail at right angle
  • 2 is in front looking from the East side to hide seam
  • 1 nails were finish nails for little hold, then finished with .113 framing nails, half and full head
    • Pulled out 1 on W side - to equalize the edge
    • Good thing about finish nails - they pull out easily to equalize corners
  • Note that 4 is a 1x8, and 5 is a 1x6.
    • South corner also has a 1x6 on the east side, and 1x8 on the south side - to match 4 and 5
    • Note that a seam shows between 4 and 5 - and the same on south side.
      • Keep it the same for uniform looks.

How to Overlap Siding

  • Note that both sides are notched so that there is no bump between sections (common part of nailing plate is removed) - and butt leg (next page) is trimmed?

Top of trellis hang should be caulked before vinyl siding is applied. J channel helps to block water, but if there are joints in j-channel - they will leak. So there is no advantage to J-channel over starter strip. Advantage of starter strip is ½ the cost.

Starter Strip

  • Leave ¼” space between starter strips
  • Leave ¼” space between starter strip and J channel at corner or door
    • OBI version has trim + J channel
  • Why not use J-channel instead of starter strip?
    • Because J-channel is a mini-gutter that collects water and debris

J-Channel:

  • Must be continuous over doors and windows of interior spaces to minimize leakage into house
  • Overlap vertical J-Channel (shingle)
    • Cut away 1” of nailing flange on upper channel - and the lip of face
    • Insert into lower J-Channel, but leave a ¼” gap in nail flange
  • Is J-channel on edges even with Starter Strip?

Issues and Notes

  • On carport, we only have ⅝” fastener depth - need to use screws
  • “In certain situations, it may be necessary to use J-channel as a starter strip” - p.13
  • “The corner post should extend 3/4” below the starter strip.” - p.13
  • 10” should be flashed on corner - but housewrap classifies as flashing here. Link.
  • Starter strip ¾” below corner post - but does this apply to our corner trim? Link.
  • Undersill trim - “Utility Trim: a piece of trim used any time the top lock has been removed from the siding, to secure a siding panel. Also referred to as “undersill” or “finish” trim; double utility trim is also available.’ Link.

J-Channel

Utility Trim

Siding can be attached either in front of or behind the utility trim - depending on where in relation to rib height it is cut

22 of 30

  • Let’s derive above aperture. It is similar for below aperture.

Tight. Ok.

Loose, not ok.

Utility trim is used to hold siding.

  • Specifically, Abtco instructions state that utility trim is used any time the upper lock (or bottom lock) on siding has been removed. P. 17.
  • Note this is not entirely correct - to maintain correct angle of siding - furring strip may be needed - ie -

23 of 30

Around Windows

  • Need notcher, snips and razor.
  • P. 17 of Abtco instructions.
  • But depending on where the cut is made - may need furring strip to space

Splicing Undersill Trim - Towards Eaves

  • Will need to splice - as we have 32’ of “eave”
    • “Should more than one length of undersill trim be required, make a splice as shown by cutting away 1” from the back of the undersill trim and lapping the sections, leaving a 1/4” space between nailing strip sections.”
  • Note siding detail going up the house: cut off nailing flange, but stick siding into j-channel.
    • Cut is around 1.5”

Vinyl Install

Guide PDF

  • Starter strip - nail at 10” intervals
    • Nail must go in ¾”
  • Leave ¼” at end for expansion
  • Leave ¼” between strips to allow for expansion
  • Leave space for J channel going to corner or wall
  • Vinyl panels move freely side to side when fastened
  • J channel goes around windows and doors
    • In our case, it goes up to the trim.
  • Nail siding at 8-12” apart
  • Note - for screws - largest major screw thread that fits is #8 which is 5/32 major diameter (notch size)

J-Trimming A Window

J-Channel:

  • J-channel around window is tight? Here it seems to be
    • 8-10 minutes per window once technique is down
    • I like this guy - he pays attention to workflow time
  • Steps:
    • Install bottom, notch out and cut off where sides will overlap bottom. No angle.

Steel version - top is not bent, it’s just a gutter that spills.

Interior of Obstruction

What happens at interior hole:

  • Miter the top and sides like in normal window detail, but now the trim fits inside the aperture, so measurement of trim is same as “window” measurement
  • Note we may need to use undersill flashing at bottom and/or top of “window” - depending on location of “window” with respect to rest of siding
  • Note the siding alignment inside “window” must match the rest of house
  • This also applies to carport where trim forms a square
