Branch Limits

1

6 of 30

What do you get when you have:

  • 79 branches,
  • 308 shelving locations,
  • 147 item types, and
  • 1,451 collection codes?!

6

The Problem

7 of 30

  1. Use SQL to add branch limits based on what people are using today.
  2. Focus clean-up effort on shelving locations.
  3. Create process to add new shelving locations.
  4. Rinse and repeat for item types and collection codes.
  5. Enjoy fewer data entry errors!

Library Groups

2

9 of 30

You have a consortia with multi branch districts

9

The Problem

10 of 30

  1. Libraries are independent and partitioned from patrons, but resource share
  2. Districts can’t be partitioned and need to share patrons and edit items
  3. Some materials are not shared outside of the district but are shared within district
  4. It is nice to search by district
  5. If we did floating collections, we could localize it

Bootstrap

You are spending too much time writing customizations and it still looks out of place when you’re done!

The Problem

What is Bootstrap?

What version does Koha use?

15

A free and open-source CSS framework for front-end web development…

…which means a way to keep your customizing consistent while also building new tools without starting fresh.

Koha was upgraded to bootstrap 5 in version 24.11 for both the staff interface and the OPAC.

⚠️Tip: With Koha open, you can find the bootstrap script tag (do a Ctrl+F for bootstrap) and click it within the page source (Ctrl+U) to see the version currently in use

How it works

18

For simple things like alerts and badges, adding the component keyword and the styling keyword(s) as classes to an element will style them appropriately.

<div class='alert alert-warning' role='alert'><h4>Warning</h4>Trouble up ahead</div>

The Matrix

How do you achieve better load balancing for systemwide holds with small, medium and large libraries?

The Transport Cost Matrix

23

ANSWER

24 of 30

With thanks to Jason Robb for inspiration…

Group libraries into smaller zones that are balanced:

  • Borrowing history
  • Number of holdable items

The "cost" to share "in zone" = $1.

The "cost" to share "out of zone" = $2.

Not every librarian can be an expert in MYSQL and writing reports

26

The Problem

27 of 30

There’s still lots you can do!

27

RESPONSE

28 of 30

You can do more with reports!

  • Automatically include links to records and borrowers
  • Batch updates on report results
  • Add columns to the output
  • Insert parameters
  • What is this log of which you speak?
  • Hide data menus
  • New! DataTables!
