NORTHWEST ISD

Limited Open Enrollment

2 of 11

WHAT IS LIMITED OPEN ENROLLMENT?

  • Limited Open Enrollment is a planned program to allow a set number of students who live outside of Northwest ISD boundaries to enroll at specific schools within the district.
  • These schools would be chosen based solely on available capacity and revised annually.
  • Seats are limited, as a cap will be set per campus to leave capacity for students who may move into a school’s attendance boundaries.

WHY LIMITED OPEN ENROLLMENT?

  • While Northwest ISD is a fast-growth school district, some schools are in areas with declining or stagnant enrollment.
  • Without Limited Open Enrollment, Northwest ISD would have to consider more frequent rezoning, potentially moving students to schools further from home, or closing schools entirely.

ADDITIONAL ASPECTS

Northwest ISD will meet the needs of all its students, including transfers, though Limited Open Enrollment will include stipulations to offer this program within our capabilities.

  • An enrollment processing fee of $100 per student, with family cap, who takes part in the Limited Open Enrollment program. An annual fee would also be implemented.
  • Transportation will not be provided for any student in the program, including students in special programs.
    • Students with SPED needs can receive those services in their home district, and Northwest ISD is not obligated to provide this transportation.
  • Limited Open Enrollment is not planned to include areas where additional staffing is required – such as opening a new section for a small number of new students or adding more service-based staffing.

These aspects and recommendations are tentative.

FINAL CONSIDERATIONS

These processes will remain unchanged, such as staff who transfer their students in the district. Both the timelines and stipulations remain the same. This is a separate program.

We will continue to reserve an ample portion of campus seats for students who may move into a school’s attendance boundary or staff who join our district and may transfer their students.
