  • Many ways to give your time and talents—every contribution counts
  • Your involvement makes Decatur High School stronger!

  • Stereotype vs/ Reality
    • Lots of meetings
      • Reality: Often just this monthly meeting, then some side planning for set events
    • There are many parents involved already
      • Reality: ‘Committees’ are often 1-3 people getting things done & other volunteers help when asked.
    • Too much time
      • Reality: Even 1-3 hours a year make a difference and are appreciated

Teacher Appreciation (Kyo)

    • Organize events and treats for staff appreciation
    • Support teacher classroom supply lists/needs
    • Needs: Volunteers for events, set-up/clean-up, community partners

Dances (Mary Ann)

    • Work with SGA and faculty to plan Homecoming Dance and an underclassman event
    • Oversee décor, food, safety, and entertainment (working with event company and school)
    • Needs: “Night of” support (chaperones, etc.)

Class Parent Coordinator (Utoia)

    • Coordination among Freshman to Senior class parents
    • Needs: Class parents to coordinate volunteers for class-specific activities

Fundraising (Jack)

    • Organize, research and oversee fundraising events
    • Needs: Coordinator for Passive Fundraising (eg Koger Reward, etc.), Event attendance

Cultural Arts + Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (Chair needed)

    • Share PTSA updates on performing arts events
    • Support cultural arts teachers and student DEI events

Student Volunteering (Angie)

    • Lead efforts to track and communicate student community service hours
    • Needs: Assistant to find and share volunteer opportunities

Decatur Prevention Initiative (Terri)

    • Promote positive social norms & eliminate the stigma of addiction and mental illness
    • Help DHS youth and families be free of the negative effects of substance misuse

Wellness (Jean & Venessa)

    • Focus on student and parent mental health, stress and positive lifestyle support and activities
    • Needs: People with health, mental health, and wellness skills or connections

Academic Support & Achievement (Chair needed)

    • Promote, facilitate, and recognize academic achievement
    • Support all students to succeed
    • “Make it cool to make good grades”
    • Needs: Event volunteers (Top Dog Luncheons, Honor Roll Drawings, Banquet, etc.)

Student Volunteering (Angie)

    • Lead efforts to track and communicate student community service hours
    • Needs: Assistant to find and share volunteer opportunities
