What is Lakota Central?

  • A hybrid-virtual school where students come in-person and also complete virtual assignments

    • Separate location from main campuses – uses lower east wing of WF (with separate entrance)
    • An opportunity to develop personalized student schedules based on need

What is Credit Flex?

  • An alternative way to earn graduation credit

  • Outside of the regular student day and schedule

  • Generated and planned by students

  • Available to students eligible for high school credit

Online Courses Overview

  • Taken through an approved online provider for original credit or credit recovery

  • Completed outside of the regular student day

  • Paid for by students
    • fees based on provider and any required exam proctor

Students are responsible to take all applicable Ohio State Tests within State defined timelines

Mastery Assessment Overview

  • Testing out of a course without sitting for it

  • Components

    • Course examβ€”must achieve 80% or greater
    • Possible presentation of performance-based task to Credit Flex Committee when applicable

  • Completion of the process prior to the next course in the sequence
  • Student fees, as appropriate

NOTE: For courses that don’t have exams already created, their creation and availability is based on district capacity to implement

Individual Plans Overview

  • May be used for independent study, internships/field experiences, community service/service learning, or educational travel*

  • Are individualized to students’ interests, skills, or career goals

  • Require a licensed Teacher of Record (TOR) assigned to the student by Lakota

  • Require detailed outlines from the student, including learning activities and assessments

  • Student fees, as appropriate

*Credit Flex Plans are generated by the student. Examples available upon request

A Note on the NCAA

  • The NCAA has strict rules and regulations regarding acceptable course credit and eligibility for student athletes.

    • No credit is given for testing out of course content.
    • Not all online courses are NCAA approved.
    • Guidelines change frequently.

NOTE: Student athletes should consult the NCAA Eligibility Center to determine whether or not Credit Flex is an option for them.

The Credit Flexibility οΏ½Handbook and Application

  • Available from counselors and on the district website at:

  • Detailed information about options and the application process

  • All necessary forms and deadlines

  • For students to use to discuss with their counselors to ensure that the plan aligns with their graduation plans

IMPORTANT NOTE: Credit Flex is not retroactive. Credit Flex applications will only be considered prior to students beginning work on an option.

Process

  1. Student creates a Credit Flex plan using the Handbook as a guide.
  2. The student completes the Credit Flex Application (on the district website)
  3. The Application is Reviewed
  4. The student is notified of approval or necessary revisions.
  5. Once approved
      • the student completes the work independently.
      • The student meets as required with a Teacher of Record (MA, IP, and online).
  6. Upon completion
      • Individual Plan - the student presents their work to appropriate personnel.
      • Mastery Assessment - the TOR will notify the student their results.
      • Online Course - student must confirm that their counselor has received the final grade.

Timeline

  • Specific deadlines are provided in the Credit Flex Handbook.

  • Interested students must check the timeline carefully to ensure they can meet all deadlines.

  • Students using Advanced Placement Tests for the Mastery Assessment option will not be able to apply any credit earned until the following school year.

If a student wants to take an online course over the summer, that application needs to be approved by the last day of school.

Credit Flex - Physical Education

    • Credit Flex for PE requires the student to submit a Credit Flex Application for planned activities and coursework.

    • Students can apply to earn PE credit through one of the Credit Flexibility options (see Lakota Credit Flexibility Handbook and Application).

    • IMPORTANT NOTE: Students choosing a Credit Flex Individual Plan for PE credit must complete the following:
        • Develop the Plan to include all of the components of the PE Academic Content Standards. Use the template from ODE - available online at http://education.ohio.gov/.)
        • Ensure that the Plan specifies how students will be assessed on each of the Standards.

The PE Waiver is a separate program and is not Credit Flexibility.

PE Waiver

PE Waiver

  • What is it?
    • Waiver of the high school graduation PE requirements
    • NOT an awarded credit
    • Allows students to take other courses instead of PE (0.5 credits)
      • Student must still meet the minimum number of credits for graduation

  • Who is eligible?
    • Students participating in interscholastic athletics at the high school after successfully completing two full seasons
      • This includes two seasons in two different sports
    • Students participating in marching band

Note: Eligibility is determined by Ohio Law

PE Waiver

  • What does the student need to do?

    • Participate in the two, full seasons and let his/her counselor know that he/she plans to use the PE Waiver for the PE graduation requirements

Original and Credit Recovery Courses

    • Visit the Lakota website for this year’s dates and location

    • Courses for original credit:
      • Health and Physical Education
        • Completed remotely
        • PE Offerings - Fitness and Sports and Team and Individual Sports

    • Courses for credit recovery (only for students who have already taken the course and have NOT passed):
      • Required courses for the four content areas (English, Math, Social Studies, and Science)
      • Completed remotely with in-person help sessions

Registration and Cost

  • Visit the Lakota website for this year’s fees and registration timeline

    • Fees are paid through PaySchools Central
      • Directions for registration through PaySchools Central will be posted to the Summer School website.
      • Students may not begin work until the fee has been paid

The only registration accepted after the original credit deadline will be for students needing credit recovery

Bridge to Advanced Math 7 Assessment : (for incoming 7th graders to take Advanced 7th Math in 2026-27)

    • Students will register for one assessment date via Google form online at: www.lakotaonline.com/summerschool.
    • Preparation materials will be shared with interested families.
    • Students who pass the assessment with at least a 60% overall score will be eligible to take the advanced course.

Bridge to Algebra I Assessment : (for incoming 8th graders to take Algebra I in 2026-27)

    • Students will register for one assessment date via Google form online at: www.lakotaonline.com/summerschool.
    • Preparation materials will be shared with interested families.
    • Students who pass the assessment with at least a 60% overall score will be eligible to take the advanced course.
