Grade Calculation for Middle School Final

  • Each 9 weeks mark counts 20%. The EOG Mark (in the Exam column) counts 20%. To determine a final average (given the current Grade Reporting Regulations) the average is based on the letter grades of A, B, C, D, and F.
  • In order for a calculation of a letter grade to take place, the average of the 7-point range for each letter grade is used, with the exception of an F. The following values are assigned to the letter grades:
  • A = 97
  • B = 89
  • C = 81
  • D = 73
  • F = 66 (an F was calculated on a 7-point scale as well as the other grades)
  • It is important for teachers and administrators to understand that the actual numerical grade earned by a student is not the grade used for calculations (per policy…not NCWISE). The letter value of that grade is used to calculate final marks.

Example of Grade Calculation

  • For example: student earns the following:
  • F the first 9 weeks
  • A the second 9 weeks
  • B the third nine weeks
  • C for the fourth nine weeks
  • A for the EOG. The grade would be calculated as follows:
  • 66 x .20 + 97 x .20 + 89 x .20+ 81 x .20 + 97 x .20 which would give him/her a 86 = B
