    • Teacher introductions – get to know them!
    • Confirm timing with teacher before starting. Let them know how they can help you during the lesson
    • Collect Waivers
      • Collect all waivers from teacher. If they are missing some tell them to bring them on the coast trip, but take what they have. Keep them together with a paper/binder clip and use a post it to label the teacher name and school. Keep them stored in a safe place (i.e. the supply bin). They contain sensitive information.
    • Timing is critical – wear a watch and do not go over time
    • Media
      • Any videos/images to be shown will be found on the teacher portal
      • www.oceandiscoveryinstitute.org/teachers
    • Utilize classroom management tools
      • Snorkel Mask

      • If you can hear my voice say… feat. Vocab/relevant words
      • When I say… you say… feat. Vocab/relevant words
      • Create your own! Just be sure to teach it to them
        • Stay away from normal classroom attention getters (123 eyes on me, waterfall) unless requested by teacher
    • Assign helpful tasks to your fellow
      • Divide the room in half for activity check-ins
      • Give clear instructions

9 of 46

COMMUNITY BUILDING LOGISTICS

  • Switching classes
    • 5-10 minutes between classes
    • Fellow should pack supplies away once done being used for easy transition
    • Reset in new classroom

  • Breaks between classes
    • Be respectful in hallways
    • Bring snacks/lunch for days with longer breaks
    • If working >5 hours, lunch break will be built into schedule

  • Travel between schools
    • Clean up as fast as possible from 1st school – have fellow do clean up as you finish lesson
    • Give yourself at least 15 minutes to get set up at 2nd school – more if you are unfamiliar with it

COMMUNITY BUILDING LOGISTICS

Troubleshooting

    • Lesson time
      • Occasionally, teachers will forget you are coming or have a conflict they forgot about

Introduce planting process, procedure and supplies

1) Pick a pot with soil (geosphere)

2) Add a few seeds on top and lightly pack into soil

3) Spray with water (hydrosphere) 10 times

4) Place in blue bucket w/ rock.

Assign seeds & take class to garden for planting

  • Once everyone had planted their seeds, explain next step.
  • Science is fun and we can use it in many ways! Instead of walking these plants down to the nursery, what else can we do? Ask students if they see anything that can be used.
  • Introduce zip line & split class in half, one sending plants and one receiving,
  • Students practice communication: Name > Zipping? > Zip On!
  • Upstairs (Senders): Line up and take turns gently pushing plants down zipline.
  • Downstairs (Receivers): Take turns catching plants and bringing to nursery.

INSTRUCTOR CORE KICK-OFF

Welcome to the 2022-23 School Year!

What are you looking forward to this school year?

What is something you are leaving behind from last school year?

40

41 of 46

CLIPBOARD ORGANIZATION

Clipboards are a great resource to use during instruction.

- Share some examples of how you use yours!

Personalize it!

  • Stickers can be used to express personal interests (school/work appropriate).
  • They also make great conversation starters & community builders w/ students
  • Ocean Discovery Sticker for uniformity & so it can be easily identified if left behind

Keep it simple

  • Curriculum “cheat sheet”
  • Program Timing Schedule
  • Blank paper for notes
  • Clean out after every grade level

Use as a reference, not as a script

  • Cheat Sheets should include brief statements/keywords that will help you remember the main point at a glance
  • Keep your hands free by putting it down close by during instruction

INSTRUCTOR CORE KICK-OFF

Ocean Discovery Institute: Young lives transformed through science.

Activity (pt 1): In 1-2 sentences, write down your “why”.

42

43 of 46

INSTRUCTOR CORE KICK-OFF

Mission: To inspire the next generation of science leaders, Ocean Discovery Institute creates learning experiences for young people traditionally excluded from science due to race, income status, and educational opportunity. Our students will join high-paying fields, break generational poverty, and change the future of science.

Waves…

Energy is transferred from one wave to the next and so on. Instructors play a vital role in creating the next set of waves, as we use science to inspire students. Think of how our energy is transferring to the students.

Activity (pt 2): Re-read your previous statement. Does it align with our mission? How can we focus our goals to best serve the students & community, while also focusing on personal growth?

Write your final “why” on the wave and tape it to your clipboard.

Then, write down 1 personal instructor goal you have for the 5th/2nd Grade season, we will re-visit these at every new training session.
