  • Do YOU enjoy learning new things?
  • Do YOU enjoy solving problems?
  • Do YOU enjoy inventing new things?
  • Do YOU want to make the world a better place?

If so…………..

You might become a scientist or engineer!!

Scientists and Engineers Use:

  • Math
  • Computers
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Their Brain!

Sometimes scientists and engineers work together to do some incredible things.

That’s why I want to tell you about the Science Olympiad!

15 of 23

On Saturday February 10, 2024, at Emerson Middle School, 4 & 5th teams compete against one another for gold, silver, and bronze medals.

Each team represents its home school.

16 of 23

What are the events?

  • Aerodynamics
  • Egg Drop
  • Mystery Box
  • Rubber Band Catapult
  • Structures

  • Students choose 1 event!
  • Students work in small teams (2-3 individuals)
  • Each team has a parent who coaches the team
  • Teams practice after school and on weekends (at least 3 times)

AERODYNAMICS

Using one sheet of paper and 5 centimeters of masking tape, can you make a paper airplane fly so that it will land on a target 8 meters away?

18 of 23

EGG DROP

With 10 sheets of paper, 15 inches of tape, and scissors, can you make a landing pad for an egg so that the egg doesn’t crack when you drop it 4 feet, 5 feet, 6 feet, 7 feet, 8 feet or higher?

19 of 23

MYSTERY BOX

Can you blindly identify the characteristics of an object hidden inside a mystery box?

Just using your sense of touch, can you tell its weight?

Its length?

Its texture?

Can you identify the object?

20 of 23

RUBBER BAND CATAPULT

Can you build a catapult that will shoot a rubber band so that it lands on a target placed between 4 to 10 meters away?

Can you create a good chart that shows the results of one rubber band shooting practice?

Can you explain how you used your chart and graph results to decide your best shooting position?

21 of 23

STRUCTURES

Can you build a tall, free-standing structure out of 250 round toothpicks and 1 stick of clay?

How tall can you build it……… before it tips?
