Builders all over our country have not used coloured tiles yet because this is no longer relevant. Some of the mosaics are removed from the walls of the buildings, returning them to a dull grey colour. Nevertheless, in the cities of Vladimir region there are still monumental examples on which everyone can study the history of mosaic houses.
When Khrushchev announced the «fight against excesses in architecture» in 1960s, mosaic remained almost the only type of applied art used in standard projects. It was both a means of agitation and an attempt to add colour to the grey concrete jungles.
47, 49, 51 Balakirev Street – there is a series of mosaics where everyone can see brave folk warriors (1967)
The direction of regional and national motives is especially interesting. So the mosaic became the indicator of national identification in typical and monotonous buildings.
43 Balakirev Street - Mily Alekseevich Balakirev is on the mosaic panel, he was a Russian composer, a pianist, a conductor, a teacher, and the head of «The Mighty Group» (1967)
The mosaic on Zhukovsky Street is interesting precisely for its regional, Vladimir-Suzdal motives of white-stone carvings on the medieval cathedrals.
2 Zhukovsky Street – Mosaic with Vladimir-Suzdal motives
Most of the Soviet mosaics showed the pictures from the lives of the Soviet country. They were filled with light, kindness and hopes of Soviet people in their bright future.
26 Mira street (1962) - Large-scale work of Gennady Borshchev
The choice of plot depended on many reasons. The first reason was the type of the building. The theme of science and discoveries was on the university. Everyone saw industrial plots on the walls of the apartment houses near the plant.
87 Gorky Street - The panel by Gennady Borshchev «Creators of Science» is on the facade of the building of Vladimir State University (1964)
73 Lenin Avenue - The building of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise «Krona» is decorated with a mosaic panel «Engineers - designers»
In the autumn of 2020, the owner of the apartment at 2 Yubileynaya Street closed the part of a unique wall mosaic with insulation. Gennady Borshchov and Nikolai Modorov reflected the views of authentic stone carvings of Vladimir region there.
2 Yubileynaya street - Mosaic (1977)
The same year, a resident of the house #105 on Noyabrskaya Street in Yurievets covered with insulation the part of the panel of Viktor Dynnikov, which welcomed guests from Moscow in 1980 in Olympic Games.
105 Noyabrskaya street - Mosaic (1979)
Unfortunately, none of the wall mosaics has been included in the register of the cultural heritage sites yet. These mosaics may completely disappear due to the aggressive climate and human activity in several years, and as well as a part of the history of Vladimir.
44 Stroitelei Avenue - Mosaic (1965). The part of this mosaic panel depicting the builders was irretrievably lost after the addition of a neighboring house.
The activists of the movement that is called "Vladimir of the Future" created an Internet map of city mosaics and panels with a brief description of the objects. The list includes 53 places.
The goal of the project is to preserve the legacy of the Soviet era, which added colours to grey panel houses. The map will be updated. Anyone can add a photo and description of objects through a special feedback form.
